[SILVER] Legend of the Galactic Heroes (S1E3) "An Indomitable Prodigy"

Got a board started for the entire Gundam UC watch-through, which oughta be far larger and longer than this... so I'm completely set to go for some insane tracking! ^_^

Know Your Roll

Oh no, seeing that character status board you've already got is horrifying. That's going to get so crowded if you keep it updated with every major character introduced. I've always loved the lore for the founding of the Alliance. They made a giant ship of dry ice that they flew off into distant space with a small number of people, built a fleet of long-range ships to flee further, founded their own country, and then by pure chance ran back into the Empire 167 years later and instantly got into a war. It's brushed over very quickly in this episode and I don't think it gets fully explained for a very very long time, but it's one of my favorite bits of worldbuilding in this series. It also explains why the Alliance and Empire are so different. There was a 167-year gap in development, both cultural and technological. The Empire doubled down on its Prussian obsession, while the Alliance evolved a culture that more closely resembles our own modern aesthetic. One is now a sci-fi version of a 19th-century European empire while the other is a late 20th-century democracy. This gives the author a lot of room to play with the strengths and weaknesses of two very influential forms of government from our history, which we'll see lots of in the future.
