Dictator Scomo

[Early Access]

Hello Patrons!

Remember that time last year when Scomo decided that this whole democracy thing was just too much of pain and shut down parliament?

You can't be held accountable for your actions if there's nobody around to question you.

Thank you for your continued support,
The FJ Team.

I’ve just discovered FJ’s and I’m impressed, with it all. What impresses me most is that even the housebound can be a part. I can contribute to a vehicle of change. It’s been a long time

Peak jordies was the brumby video in 2017/18

So I just checked my billing history, turns out i've been supporting since December 2017, so I guess I have had time to slowly lose faith. I don't think my views are coming from an expectation that paying for something should make that thing indebted to my expectations. I guess the question has to be. If the increased ~drama~ is, as you say 'seasonal,' then is there a hope that the season will end.? Or, is it more likely that increased drama is part of a growing trend? Are we ok with that growing trend, or is that trend basically how someone like FJ slowly becomes JJJ's Hack? Obviously FJ has always had a lot of comic content. From Yilmaz to shit tv reviews to bogan character impersonations. In this sense, I agree with you that there has always been a portion of drama in his content. My worry is that the meme-based drama stuff is starting to water down political issue based videos. And don't get me wrong, I think meme references function really well as analogies in FJ content but let's break this video down to flesh out what I'm saying. - Minute 1: "Scomo fully sounds like a dictator..." (no direct quotes, 1 vague reference to holiday in bushfire...) - minute 2: "hipsters suck, also branch stacking has happened everywhere according to heaps of Canberrans" (screen grab of supporting article - no links to substantiate) - minute 3: "scomo did a smear campaign to get preselcted" (no details about smear campaign) - minute 4: "parliamentary division votes being used to stop labour speeches" (this bit was good - we got numbers) - minute 5: "scomo closed parliament during covid" (0 context about how and why that happened) - minute 6: "scomo press drops in a way that controls the entire media message"(good but way too quick - although the point here is to point to "The Tamed Estate," which is good) - minute 7: "labour is half of parliament despite sucking at modern media, also subscribe to FJ" (Albo's youtube views...) - minute 8: "buy shirts" There's maybe 2 decent minutes in there. And the rest is a whole lot of suggestion that wouldnt actually aid anybody in a discussion with someone who has a differing political viewpoint. You just nod and agree if you already agree - which is the definition of easy watching media that's just made to appease you as a target audience.

I suppose it depends on what you're expecting to be the main purpose of these videos: high quality researched journalism, or crude humour from a controversial comedian? I think it'd be difficult to deliver on both, but I am impressed when Friendly Jordies appears able to combine the two on a regular basis.

My faith is only getting stronger!

Yeah, well, I got a link from someone who is pretty middle of the road. Also, Triple j’s is sooooooo g_eh.

Honestly, I've been here for several years (I remember the Bali video being released, so that's a vague timestamp), and I can't think that so much has changed in the past year. Nor do I think it's ever been easy to recommend Jordies to someone of an extremely different political view, because there's always shots fired inbetween the facts (althought there's usually enough facts that people can't mount a counter-argument; just fire back at Jordies' character, or perhaps refuse to engage entirely.) I think some additional content is being produced that has a new slant. I guess there's more ~drama~ going on, which involves a certain amount of egging on from the community, and I'm not engaged or interested in that at all, but there are still issue-based videos being released. And if the Liberal government were, say, to attack Medicare, there's no way that wouldn't result in a brutal and very specific takedown of those actions (and any historical precedent). I think it's worth considering the context of 2020 and 2021 in analysing any difference in approach to delivering content. It's also worth noting that Jordies linking sources (not just screencapping) is a fairly recent phenomena. It dates back over a year, but maybe like three years or so. I guess there's a bigger picture if you step back far enough and aren't considering the content on a video by video basis. 12-ish months is a pretty short amount of time to gauge things. At which point during that time does one "slowly" lose faith? After 8 months? I do see where you're coming from in terms of the content. You've picked up on something, and you're certainly not obliged to hand over money if you're not happy with the vids that are coming out. But I say this with no unkindness whatsoever, I do feel like you're overreacting a little to what's nothing more than seasonal change. I suppose that comes with the additional investment of being a Patreon, that one suddenly expects *something* from a creator (what that something is must change from person to person). However, as a pretty much ancient fan, I can confirm that the core of this channel hasn't changed much, long game, and the informative content persists regardless of whatever else is going on in the interim.

I've been watching and supporting FJ for more than a year now. The videos used to be short and focussed investigations of one issue. I would come away with some actual facts and evidence about what different parties and stakeholders had done about said issue - informative journalism in other words. Now the videos are just vague caricatured comparisons more focussed on the meme than the reasons the meme makes sense. I would never recomend FJ to someone who has a different political leaning, cos I feel like it's becoming a 'preach to the converted' comic strip. In the good old days, it was the type of thing I would have been happy to shove in annoying private school liberal kids faces, knowing they'd be unable to argue. Is anyone else slowly losing faith - or am I just fuel for the next character assasination fire..?
