Futureporn Jun 2024 Update

Bugfixes

There was a bug where visitors received an error when they tried to tag a video. This bug has been squashed, and visitors can create tags.

Upcoming New Stuff

Stream Archive is almost here! (I'm waiting until Monday to deploy the update.) Stream Archive gives us visibility into a VTuber's stream counts. It shows us the amount of known streams, and how many we have archived. This will help us collect them all!

Since we want to preserve VODs forever, we want the best copy available. Stream Archive also shows us VOD quality with one of three color coded archive statuses. Good, Issue, and Missing.

Stream Archive brings us one step closer to our goal of Community Uploads. For this to work, I had to spend some time refactoring the site to handle multiple VODs per stream. When a stream has more than one VOD, visitors will see a list of available VODs to choose from.

Prepare for an explosion of stream metadata. We're going to know who streamed, on what platform, at what time. Granted, we aren't going to have the VODs at first, but what we will have is a checkpoint. From here forward, we're tracking streams so we can populate the archive later.

Getting started, we won't immediately know of every VOD from the past. There will be a certain amount of error, but as time goes on, the error rate will decrease. Archiving all the VODs will take time and effort from the community, but this is a great start and I'm excited to hear your thoughts.

The Future of IPFS is not looking good

There was some recent news about Protocol Labs distancing themselves from IPFS. It's a red flag for me because Juan Benet, the visionary leader behind IPFS, is not part of the new team working on IPFS.

I've been thinking about this for awhile. IPFS is not easy to use, and it hasn't been getting any easier. For IPFS to take off, it needs to have good user experience and achieve a network effect. People need to be running IPFS on their home computers frequently, but there are so many flaws with IPFS desktop that I can't recommend anybody try using it. It's a resource hog that literally crashes people's modems and there's no sensible way to fix it.

Cloudflare has discontinued their IPFS gateway. This further weakens the IPFS ecosystem.

It might be time time to switch to a better format-- tried and true Torrents.

Hard things are worth doing

Building Futureporn has been one the most difficult things I've ever done, but I'm enjoying this journey. I've learned countless new skills, from web development to cloud deployments to time management.

Thank you

Futureporn continues to exist thanks to it's patrons. Thank you so much for being a part of this journey. I look forward to delivering more updates and I know together we can create something great!

Comments

Super excited to see tagging is back! The stream archive also seems like it would be a really good addition to the website and help speed up getting new vods. Speaking of vods, excited to see the new vtubers! Keep up the good work!
