Behind the scenes

Winter has been ice cold and I have a bit of seasonal depression. I'm working through it as best I can. Since last month's progress report, I took some time off to focus on self care.

Progress on Futureporn was slim, but I have some stories and some thoughts I'd like to share. They are off topic to Futureporn, but I wanted to avoid radio silence and make sure to share something this month.

Family Time

I had a lovely Christmas with family where we ate delicious food and played board games. One of my brothers and his wife flew in for a few days, which made me really happy. All my busy siblings made it there, it was really nice. We exchanged gifts and I received some money too.

I went to my favorite local game store with my brothers where I decided I was going to start collecting Pokemon cards. I came up with the goal of collecting Pokemon numbered 1-151. I think it might be easy and inexpensive as long as I stick to recently printed cards. I bought some bulk commons and uncommons and I've been finding the searching and sorting therapeutic.

On New Year's Eve, my brother bought a bunch of fireworks which produced a spectacular show. The finale "cake" shot volleys of mortars which rattled our ears and the bright, vivid colorful flames burst in the air just above our heads. It beat any public firework show because all the action was right there where we could almost reach out and touch it. It excited the senses-- we felt the booms in our chests and we smelled the sulfur. It got my heart going doki doki.

Snowed in

We got snow, and I lost my marbles a bit. I caught myself schizo posting on a forum where I thought it would be hilarious if I replied with edgy messages towards my own posts. I was laughing out loud as confused spectators wondered if I forgot to switch accounts while making a Sybil attack. Maybe my new year's resolution will be to get out more.

I did some bicycle maintenance. I gave it a good clean from top to bottom, wiping away all the road grime that comes from wet sandy roads this time of year. I rotated my tires to even out the difference in wear from front and back. I had put it off for weeks, but I found joy from the focused task and it's end result.

Luckily it's been a mild winter where the snow melted after a few days, so I've been spending as much time as possible cruising around on my bicycle, my favorite activity to vanquish the mind goblins. Another Christmas gift I received was a new vertical cutoff beam headlight with flashing LEDs that brings me excitement and joy every time I ride in the dark. It feels high tech and cool and I love its design.

Tangental Tree Story

My parents have lots of trees in their yard. They've had them for years and years, and some of them are incredibly ugly. One has bark completely split down the center and the inner trunk was exposed to the elements. Another has two huge symmetrical branches that each grew so tall that one of the branches collapsed under it's own weight. Rather than chop the trees down and plant anew, my parents repaired the trees.

The tree with exposed trunk got a slathering of some sort of organic, goopy tree coating which protects the wood. The tree with two branches where one fell got a substantial prune to lighten the load, and a giant threaded rod drilled through each branch. The rod held up the fallen branch, and was secured on either side with heavy bolts sandwiched between treated wood supports. A tree I would have written off as dead was repaired and has continued to live a healthy life.

This story of broken, ugly trees being repaired and their life extended repeats itself every season. Their trees are more akin to pets than they are to livestock. Investments rather than ephemeral decorations. Maybe it's my elder's parental instinct to keep the trees going rather than cutting them off, and it's that story of persistence and preservation that is speaking to me right now.

Futureporn is a passion project that has been going for 5+ years and it's been a huge challenge. I'm often overwhelmed with the scope and scale of what I want to achieve and right now it feels too hard. Sometimes I want to give up.

But I can't give up, because software development is all I've ever wanted. This is literally my dream job. I've worked so hard to get to this point and I can't let it all fall down. Just like the trees. The ugly old trees that a sensible person would cut down and replace. I can't quit working on Futureporn! I want to see my projects succeed!

Progress and growth take a long time. So I have to be patient. I have to build slowly, and think long term. We have time and pressure, and I believe we are on track to get to the best version of Futureporn.

What's next

Futureporn has two main parts, the Content Management System (CMS), and the Background task processor. Right now, the backend task processor has some big problems that have stopped VODs from getting thumbnails, torrents, Mux assets, funscripts, etc.

My next project is to work on the background task processor so we can catch up on the VODs which are missing assets. The build system has bottlenecks-- it takes way too many hours to process a single VOD. I have some good news here-- I received a GPU for Christmas. I haven't integrated it with the build system yet, but I'm optimistic that this will alleviate the bottleneck.

Thank you

I hope everyone is having a good start to 2026. Thanks for your support.
