On Maverick, my only issue with the movie is that all the new blood characters felt utterly two dimensional failing to replicate the Mav/Goose/Ice story. In the first movie the interactions between Mav, Goose, and Ice all felt human and evolved in a way that made sense but Hangman was just a dickhead for no reason. He wasn't a particularly awesome pilot, it was never explained why him and Rooster had the beef that they did, Hangman was just an unlikable ass and then they're all buddies at the end for no reason whatsoever. Rooster barely changed over the course of the movie, and everyone else in the new pilot group were all completely forgettable. Film had great action and the AWACS moment lives rent free in my head but all the new pilots were all such meh nothing characters to me.
