My first day on the job: 16, worked at Sonic as a car hop. Not only did the manager try to get me to go sell weed to someone at the back of the store (uh, no.) But I also had a 70 year old man order 5 hamburgers (5 for $5 Tuesdays were wild) with extra EXTRA grilled onions, mustard, and LOTS of peppermints on the side, and a small cup of water. Turns out, Peppermint guy was a lech & told 16 year old me that I had "bedroom eyes." I had no idea. Shift ended with the cops being called bc an old lady died in one of the stalls. I had taken the courtesy tray to her twice and she was slumped over each time. First time I thought she was napping bc there was breath on the window. By the 2nd one 15 min later...yeah no she was absolutely gone.

2025-02-20 08:25:40 +0000 UTCI’m a new busser at Olive Garden. I went to make peach tea, and accidentally used sweet tea instead of plain. One of the servers watched me do it and didn’t say a word… but somehow the other busser found out and told me I messed up.

2025-02-11 23:22:07 +0000 UTCI was a corporate trainer for a restaurant brand in canada. We were opening a new store in New Brunswick and it was a crazy fun cheerleader type atmosphere. We often played little jokes on the trainees and as one of Our first days came to an end we tasked A new Server to empty the hot wate dispenser… The trainers went to have their post shift meeting and an hour later…the server was still there…trying to empty the tea water 😱 We had possibly Forgotten about her 😬. We just told her we would finish it up and sent her on her way 🤣

2024-12-29 03:51:46 +0000 UTCMy first job in the kitchen I was a dishwasher, my manager Fred (rip) would drink on the job and he broke the pipe to the sink in the dish pit, the customers ended up fixing it for us

2023-07-02 03:01:38 +0000 UTCMy first owner used to hit us with a spatula. That was 27 years ago. And I still have PTSD from it." If you've got time to lean, you've got time to clean". And before I was manager I had another co-worker that would hit me with the rice spatula which was made of wood and three feet long...

2023-05-17 00:48:40 +0000 UTCAt 16. Modest sort of boho, a little French, a little California place. I washed dishes, prepped, bussed, brought out the occasional plate. Asked to go out to the storage closet, located right in the dining room. I was asked me to go out and be as quick and unobtrusive as possible. I felt like I was on stage as I walked across the dining room and opened the door. While I was quick, and I was quiet, I did retrieve anything as I did my best not to scream and slam the door. I fast walked back across the dining room and let the chef owners know that I had seen my first rat on the floor of the small closet.

2023-05-15 16:54:22 +0000 UTCFirst long term job, I was a server. Middle of the week, really busy night and I’m running around like a chicken with its head cut off. (My manager said I did a good job that night. So that was a relief.) Finally it’s closing time and we just mopped the floor. I say my goodbyes to everyone and they all tell me to be really careful on the slick floor, I agree to do so, walk two steps and slip so dramatically in front of the entire staff. (To this day everyone can remember the sound my elbows made when they hit the floor.) Super embarrassing first night.

2023-05-11 03:28:09 +0000 UTCFirst restaurant job at an A&W at 15 years old getting paid $3/hour…circa 1992. Same A&W my mom worked at when they used to go out to cars on roller skates. They made me polish the brass bars in the eating area. Why there were brass bars there…I don’t know. But I got all the free root beer I wanted, so that was cool. And I walked to my grandmas house across the train tracks from high school to change into my uniform and then walk to work after school. Then one of my parents picked me up when I was done. Oh…and I was dumped by my high school boyfriend while working at said A&W right after prom with him bringing in all the prom trinkets and memorabilia in front of everyone because I apparently just wouldn’t put out. Good times. What an A-Hole. 😂

2023-05-11 03:19:55 +0000 UTC1978, McDonalds. 16 years old. They used to just throw you right in back in those days. No training at all, it was just "see that guy? yeah he will tell you what to do. But that lady back there...she is over that guy so you do what she says before the other guy. OH yeah... then there's the day manager, he's back in the office, he tells you to do something do that first cause he is over both of them. etc etc etc etc There were FIVE people pointed out to me like that. I lasted all of 45 minutes. I was so confused I hardly knew my own name. I snuck out the back door.

2023-05-10 21:40:38 +0000 UTCMy first day at Kentucky Fried Chicken, my very first job in 1976, not only did I look like some weird dental hygienist/stewardess in my red polyester uniform with white nurse shoes ( omg it was like an acid nightmare) but I got targeted by a quick change artist, who quickly had money spread all over the counter. My assistant manager came over and slammed the register drawer shut and saved me. I felt like a complete dumbass, but learned a valuable lesson and could tell a scam artist from that point forward. Quick KFC fact, do you know you could come in the back door and slide all the way to the front counter because the floors were so greasy? Yeah, gross. 😄

2023-05-09 23:44:18 +0000 UTCNot on my first day but I ran out of gas once. Somehow I made it to work but I couldn't start the car after work. Fun times

2023-05-08 15:51:06 +0000 UTCUgh. First day at McDonald's. This was in the 1970s, so polyester two-piece uniform and hat. Nobody told me you weren't supposed to wear tennis shoes (they thought they were slip hazards, I guess?) so got called down for that right out the gate. Things pretty much went downhill from there.

2023-05-08 15:50:36 +0000 UTCBoy, what a first day! How did your mom react to the keys being left in the ignition the whole time? Or did you get to call your mom and fix that?

2023-05-08 15:34:35 +0000 UTCI worked as a server at an assisted retirement community for a summer I had to wear this hairnet/hat thing that covered my hair, and on my first day multiple old people mistook me for a girl, which was a blow to 16 year old me’s confidence. I also learned how to make thickened water for the first time (yes it’s as gross as it sounds)
