Random Writing Lessons: #1

Patience is a very important skill as a writer. Whether you are writing an essay, a short-story or a longer narrative piece of work, the temptation to reveal all of yourself, your plot and your characters immediately will present itself. You will feel the desire to explain yourself, it may even feel like a nagging bit of unfinished business is lingering in your mind until you purge yourself of everything you want to say immediately and all at once. The patience to resist that is vital for the tension it takes to set a good pace of revelation. It is okay for your reader to read the first few pages and have things to wonder about, the key is to straddle the line between creating confusion and curiosity. Unclear writing that muddles is different from writing that introduces ideas and people who are not yet explained. Be patient. The entire piece belongs to you, you don't have to reveal yourself at anyone else's pace. The goal is to stoke the interest of your reader not to satiate immediate urges. Writing is the art of drawn-out gratification.
