Another upside of really good lighting reference: Rendering with paint becomes so much easier, and you just know where the lights and shadows go, because you arranged them to be there.

I suppose I'm a reference convert now. Look at those feathers! I mean, I can do feathers, but building that stuff yourself, angling it so it's exactly what you want, and then photograph it so see how the light hits - that's something you can't wing.
