Agree with you 100%. In fact, I’ve read the book a billion times, and I stopped reading the sections about the adults. I just read the kids’ story. Stephen King is notorious for bad endings (he does MUCH better with shorter novels like The Shining, Misery, etc.). The first 75% of IT is spectacular. The magic of kids is beautiful, and King writes friendships so well (Shawshank). But he gets so far out there that he can’t reel it back. The last ~25% of IT is stupid and quite “icky.” A lot of King’s stuff (especially from the 80s) should go into the Cocaine Cabinet. We know he was the real deal back in the day. Helluva drug.
