First Time Watching Superman II!!!

Comments

I had forgot about Superman being created in protest to hitler, made me remember one of the things I like about my Reeve box set is it has some of those old cartoons and a few of them he is destroying ships and such fighting in WW2. No one dies but he stops some bad stuff. Superman 3 is a guilty pleasure for me. The 1st 2 films are in my top 4 ALL TIME film box with Ben Hur and John wayne’s true grit. I like 3 ok- 4 I enjoyed as a kid but the lack of a budget and how bad the effects are because of that lack of money to do them right makes the film hard to watch Now. The I really like Superman the Return it is the offical follow up to superman 2 even though it is now Brandon Routh in the part. I really like that film though it is a case of being a Good movie but not a good comic book movie since he has no one to fight, but it is a very good character driven film it explores a lot of the heart and the conflict in superman being the last of his race and in a lot of ways completely alone. how many people he hears every night crying out for help. If I did another Superman film it one be Superman Returns but now I don’t think I will do it, though the other film my alternate film that I have been thinking about is going to pack a punch, though it is a very good movie and nominated for some acadamy awards I don’t know though that is months away at this point I have others in mind for now So I will just focus on one month at a time for now.

Relevant: frost1977, Electric Boogaloo the Untold Story of Cannon Films is a documentary I think you'd really enjoy. ("They" made Supe 4 is why I mention it.)

There's just <i>too much</i> to unpack here, and I'm almost lost in the details. JL asked me for some thoughts and here are some simple ones:<p>Supe is arguably the <b>hardest</b> role for an actor, as he's literally perfect, and Chris Reeve is the only cat that ever pulled it off, imao. Supes 2 and 3 <b>both</b> effectively play with him as being perfect - and that's fun!</p><p>I don't dig the later ones "humanizing" him because...well, then he's not Superman (his name is Super Man, for Kal El's sake). </p><p>That's what makes him unique; he's "perfect" despite being weak to a piece of the destroyed world he came from (trauma metaphor!), </p><p>...and nevermind that two Jewish gents during WWII originally created him as a counter to Hitler's idea of a Übermensch (German for "super man").</p><p>...and...I've said too much again, haven't I?</p><p> I'm not a bird, I'm not a plane, I'm just a random jerk that thinks Superman 3 is the <b>best</b> superhero movie ever!</p>

Trust me, if J was really attacking or disrespecting him, you'd know it. LoL Superman isn't everyone's ideal cup of tea, myself included. While I understand and respect his place and his character, it's just not one that I ever find terribly interesting. I'm a Bruce Wayne guy, and always will be, and I'm used to people attacking and disrespecting him. Doesn't matter. He's still the GOAT in my book. Clark has his moments, just not a character I've ever felt particularly connected to. Same for Cap until the MCU, but I've always been one of the biggest Optimus Prime fans on the planet. Just depends for me based on each individual.

I never really pay attention to the shirts. fans can agree to disagree, but with out attacking or disrespecting the character and that is what I felt in the end of the reaction. Superman is special to my child hood so I felt it more like you would if someone said something about your dogs. there are a lot of superman fans people who actually know the comic books which I don't who slpit on MoS it divided the audience and as a result underperformed. which in part lead to BvS underperforming. [it made money but no what it should have.] I am somewhere in the middle on both films between a 5 -6 on both. we will just have to disagree on most of that. there are some differences between Capt &amp; Superman because of the difference in the world they live in and who writes the script. we just agree to disagree,

frost1977

The reason you said above about we never got to see Henry Cavil become fully Superman is exactly why he is the most interesting to me. We got to watch him go thru turmoil along his journey of becoming that guy. Everybody else was just squeaky clean Superman from the jump. We see Henry lose his dad because of a decision he made, we see Henry unable to save his mom from Lex because Batman is seconds away from killing him, and we also see him snap Zod’s neck resulting in him losing every bit of hope he would ever have of restoring his people bc he has killed the last person from his planet to his knowledge. He repeatedly takes lost after lost and to me those loses is what make that Superman the best Superman I ever seen. It gives him more layers and when he finally got to be the Boy Scout everybody loved he would have earned it. He had depth due to growing pains. I disagree with the three Captain America movies being the closest thing to Superman because Captain America in those movies was far from perfect. Captain America became an outlaw, he also kept the secret of Bucky killing Tony’s parents from Tony as well. Like Tony said Him and Cap was friends too. Superman wouldn’t have done any of that. This Cap being who he was to his core but watching him realize he didn’t deserve his Stars and Stripes for what he did to Tony and going against the made it that more special when he finally put them back on in End Game. I’m personally glad you picked them bc I enjoyed watching them but I do lean more towards villains. Honestly if y’all ever notice my T-shirts other than Black Panther the majority of my shirts are Villains. The only reason I got that Optimus Prime one is because he’s riding Grimlock and it’s a Mario Yoshi crossover. That is just too awesome to pass up lol.

JL

we never really got to see Henry become Superman even by the end of BvS he was still evolving, had his training wheels on in a way. The closest we get to seeing him as superman is in the theatrical version of Justice league [ the Josh wedon version] I have had Snyder fans on FB start foaming at the mouth when i have said that over there. I think we would have seen Henry's superman make that step if it wasn't for the reboot on the DCU. The Superman and Lois show on CW gets the character better than anything in the last 15 years. Superman and Lois are Married and have twin teenage boys. but nothing to me compares to those 1st 2 Christopher Reeve films. doesn't seem to matter what kind of a mood i am in I can just hear that opening of the John williams score and I feel better instantly. The theatrical version of the Helicopter to Air force one Save sequence is in my top 2 movie scenes of all time, next to John Waynes's True Grit "fill your fist scene." the version of that film you got to see that 3 hour extended cut I did not even know it exsisted until the reaction. I think blank said it was the only version he could find. It shows how important editing a film is, the theatrical is much better a much better flow. I like that superman is the most powerful character on the Hero side. though it does make it hard to write a good movie. The Brandon Routh Superman return is actually the true follow-up to superman 2 with Christopher reeve its the same superman, that movie is very character driven , how alone superman is, there is some action but that is not the core of the film. I won't be putting that film up on here now. though. but even without his powers he is still Superman, because what makes him isn't his powers, just like it isn't the powers that makes Steve Rodgers captain America. the skinny Kid who tried to join the Army 4 times to fight for his country. the " there are men laying down their lives I got no right to do less" [I messed that quote up but that's the jest of it.] He was already captain America. his Heart. Superman is the same. In a lot of way the best Superman films we have seen recently are the 3 captains America films. What makes Superman so special is his unyielding commitment to doing what is right, no matter the cost. He is able to inspire hope in others and instill a sense of justice. He is a symbol of strength and courage, and he always strives to protect those who cannot protect themselves. He is selfless, and compassionate, and always puts the needs of others above his own. Superman is truly a superhero in every sense of the word, and that is what makes him so special. All film is subjective it hits us how it hits us but if i had known about the villain thing I would not have picked either Superman film, with how close to heart those films are too me. as for Optimus Prime, I always think about hearing Peter Cullen talk about how he came up with the Voice. His brother who was a Vietnam war veteran told him- don't be a Hollywood hero, Be strong enough to be gentle. I always go with the Heros. ok my brain is tired of writing 4 am came early this morning.

frost1977

WTH man! 😂😂😂 I thought you meant you were TALKING about watching it 😝

Lol I honestly would like to know what your thoughts are on the matter. It’s a open discussion. I always look at all of us as a family and like to know what people think

JL

While I have <i><b>a lot</b></i> of thoughts about this comment thread (like two bags full of nickels worth, least)...<p>Keeping opinions to myself except this one: this is a <i>fascinating</i> discussion and I've enjoyed reading everything y'all both are saying. </p><p><i><i>Cheers JL and frost1977! </i></i></p>

Sorry you feel regret for requesting it but my opinion on things isn’t always going to align with everyone else opinion. I grew up liking the villains more than heroes anyway. Megatron, Cobra Commander, Reverse Flash, Dr. Doom, and The Shredder are the ones I use to cheer for the most. I wasn’t a Captain America fan until they made him Chris Evans. If it wasn’t for Chris Evans I honestly couldn’t tell you how I would feel about Cap. Like Blank loves Optimus Prime and I give him hell about it all the time because I’m a Megatron fan. Man of Steel his dad told him not to save him and that regret of listening to his dad in my opinion added another level of conflict to the character. It’s a difference in not being able to do something about it and being able to do something about it but don’t. It’s the regret of the decision that’s needed to make him what he should be.

JL

he watched his dad Die of a heart attack something he had no power to fix. in MoS he allowed his Dad to die when he could have saved him, I liked MoS ok but that was one of the scenes i did not. The theatrical version of the Christopher Reeve films are in my Top 4 all-time films and is IMO the babe ruth of Superman. He was a big part of my childhood. I have never read the comics but Superman has always been my fav. a comic book character, no one else is close and a top-level character across the board. even though i wasn't old enough for the 1st 3 films in the theater. Superman 4 is the earliest Theatrical memory enjoyable as a kid, though the budget for the film was reduced to pocket change so the film does not hold up. and those 4 films laid the groundwork for the Keaton batman films. Like i said John wayne, Optimus prime as long as his voiced by peter cullen, and Superman. tops of my childhood Heros. and to be honest it made a part of me regret requesting the movie as a reaction. I feel about the reeve superman and superman as a whole somewhat in the way JL feels about his Dogs.

frost1977

My issue with Superman was always he never suffered any real trauma. It wasn’t until Henry Cavil played him and the new 52 run I actually started to like the character. Growing up they gave him every power that he ever needed and he was always strong than everybody. He never became interesting to me until he had true difficulties. Henry Cavil’s Superman had to watch his dad die and live with the fact he didn’t save him. Christoper Reeves’ Superman watched Lois died in the first movie and he reversed time. That’s the type stuff that made him unappealing to me growing up because no matter what happened they gave him a easy way out. To me, he has more layers now. He can’t always punch his way out of situations because he’s not always the strongest anymore, they limited and took away some of his powers, and he’s actually experienced lost due to his decision making. Pain is what make characters interesting to me. That’s why I liked Flash, Batman, and so many others like that because they have endured more pain and suffering than most. Pain builds character because it lets you know what they can overcome and who they truly are

JL

I do feel i need to say i felt a bit of a Dis towards superman in this that Stung with how much Superman means to me. As a Kid he was on the top tier of hero besides John Wayne and Optimus Prime. He is one of the few characters who when done right makes me feel like i am 10 yrs old again. So the dis hurt. which inspired me to add a Movie to my list- an academy award-winning movie but one with a punch. or at least i am thinking about it. , i been trying to collect my thoughts on this so I may repeat some of what i said in other comments: I have found that most people i have run into who don't like superman because of all his powers don't understand the character. He is Superman he is supposed to be OP'd. I grant that that does make him Hard to write a good story. characters like batman are a lot easier to write a script for, just write a detective story and slap bats into it. With Superman, it is much harder to do. [it also doesn't help when the studio cuts down on the budget for the film which happened to this movie] But with Superman, his greatest strength is also his greatest weakness his humanity and how much he cares for people. that is why he flew away during the fight at the end was to keep the fight from hurting anyone. It was also brought out in the 1st movie the only way to really hurt superman is to hurt those he cares about. Superman and Captain America [Steve Rodgers] are the same character at their core, the big blue boy scout, Hope, doing the right thing because its the right thing to do.

frost1977

The reason why he had to lose his powers, was because to consummate the marriage with his powers he would have killed her.

Big Frank

when this movie and the first one came out they blew people's minds. remember that was NO cgi- and the writing in this one is very comic book-like. There were no other major comic book films at this time Superman would not have let lois drown even if it meant she found out who she was. He is not petty! other than maybe the thing with the diner at the end. he is an outsider, he can never lose control not even a little bit just to shake someone's hand without crushing it. this movie holds an 87% higher than most of modern DCEU films. the First movie is a 93% Lex wasn't bald because gene hackman refused to shave his head.

frost1977

what makes superman superman isn't his powers its his heart. in a lot of ways superman and captain America steve rodgers are the same at the heart of the character

frost1977

I almost fell out of my chair when J was talking about supermans revenge at the dinner!!!!

Big Frank

Superman is the godfather of all comic book heroes who knows how many would not exist without the success of his comic books in 1938. For me He is BY FAR the Best and my favorite character of all time. no one else is close.

frost1977

John Williams did the music for Superman and Star wars. only 1 year apart. John williams is simply put the greatest of all time for Music for films, he is called the mistro of the movies for a reason.

frost1977

the reason you don't see marlon barndo is that he wanted WAY to much money.

frost1977

I don't know how, but J managed to fit in a Detroit joke in this movie!!!

Big Frank

*I* would if I could afford it. Love me some Supe 3!

g g gooding

Glade to see the intro &amp; outro are on this one. Still haven't seen them for Superman the movie {issues rock eyebrow look] there are a few reactions to Superman already on YT and most seem to have a lot of clicks., might be a good one to just put over there.

frost1977

I am going to leave Superman 3 for someone else to sponsor.
