First Time Watching Southland Tales!!!

Comments

Okay, I tried to watch this movie with you and just could not get into it so I had to shut it off. I feel like I can't get that hour of my life back haha There might be a reason nobody has heard of it.

This is the way the world ends. If a movie makes you smile and a movie makes you think it's probably doing it's job regardless of everything else. The underlying story is remarkably complex but you can enjoy it on a very simple level too, there are explainers for the deeper meaning etc but I think it works on a lot of levels. It's also funny how it is politically predictive, particularly the left's lurch a big jump further to the left (and the - inevitable - violence that comes with it) that removes all hope of meeting in the middle (and the Republicans are doing Republican things too and it also criticises that), but so many other things like the absolute normalisation of porn (and war FWIW - and worse the mixing of both, hence Hustler sponsoring the US military, as one does) in society. I didn't even think about it because I haven't seen this in a little while, but Bud Light's starring role in this movie is just too glorious in light of recent events. Why have you never heard of it? Because it was a commercial disaster. It was panned by critics. It was destroyed further by the studios in a misguided attempt to rescue it - after the Cannes screening was criticised - when it didn't actually need rescuing: it was built as a multi-media experience rather than just a movie, there are three books that precede the story and set up a lot of important context that this cut tries to pack into the first few minutes. That's why the movie starts at chapter IV (4), rather than 1. Anyway, commercial disaster and it destroyed Richard Kelly's career. A writer/director that can pull in a cast like this has never made a movie since. I'd say rather than just straight watching again and trying to figure it out if you're really genuinely interested in what is going on watch one of the explainers on YT first - like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02aQwPkfmtE - because they'll explain what not reading the books and what was cut missed out and some of the subtleties of what is going on that are easy to miss - then watch it again and it'll make more sense. I mentioned this movie in the comments of your Donnie Darko reaction but I never expected you to react to it (or anybody, actually - I have more accessible suggestions like how come it is nobody has done a reaction to the genius that is the miniseries Maniac), although I have mentioned before elsewhere that I suspect this movie's time might have come because it's becoming more prescient by the day - the world IS driving itself insane (which is what Fluid Karma is a metaphor for at it's most simple level), which is the primary underlying theme. I own a lot of TV, movie and gaming memorabilia, but my first editions of the three books that were written to go with this movie are both my rarest and most prized of those.

Martin Nicholls

Janeane Garofalo - had her parts trimmed, at the very end you see her in the lower right corner. Kevin Smith - was the greybeard behind the desk that ordered the lowering of the firearm. I am so glad you had an inconceivably good time with this story!

WTF weirdness is always welcome here. LoL

Blank EOM

This sounds like a cult movie!!!

Big Frank

Time to jump on the wtf cult weirdness train once again, thank you J & Blank, less wtf next time I swear! (this is the 2h25m theatrical release for those curious)
