Pacifiers absolutely are used by the rave scene for people using MDMA/Ecstasy, you are right, but while it can't be completely dismissed, it isn't as likely when you take into account when the movie came out and the cultural environment of the inner city at the time.

I remember those days! It wasn't my scene, but I'm pretty sure it was to reduce teeth grinding from using certain drugs (MDMA)

I remember that stupid pacifier fad. I didn't get it then, but god I'd completely forgotten about it until this lol.

In the late 80's and early 90's, sucking on a pacifier was a fad that went around. Why? Kids make dumb things fads all the time. Even worse was the era when they went full-on baby bottle use for a fad. I'm sure you could make some deep, philosophical connotation about the connection to someone's lost youth and compensation, but really it was just a silly fad.
The Georgetown Hoyas gear was because at the time, their basketball program was massive and known nationally. Additionally, John Thompson, their coach, was the first Black coach to win a national championship, so they had that connection going. College basketball was also why Ricky's girlfriend was wearing the UNLV garb, as their basketball program was huge during the Tark days. And while it's only a theory, I wouldn't be surprised if they added things like that to make the ratio of blue clothes to red clothes be more equal, to try to avoid looking like they had specific gang "favoritism."

I literally said those words, "Ain't no way, Jay hasn't seen this movie." I need to know what year you were born...when did you graduate high school. I thought you were my age but you can't be. π

Hey, man. Disabled Mofos can still fuck you up. Especially if they are physically active.
Their legs may not work but their arms do. They spend all day using their upper body to get around and to lift themselves up. It's a lot of work doing shit when you can't use your legs.
And have you seen how fast some of them are in their wheelchairs? All they gotta do is run you down and it's over π.

lol, I've got everything needed to watch any movie I want. The stuff I have on VHS (other than things I recorded years ago) are things that have either never been put onto a DVD or blu ray, or they're just hard to find if they are on a disc. So, I need to be able to keep watching those movies :) I also have an all region disc player for that stuff you can only find on region 2 or other foreign discs. My movie collection is my passion.

I know there are probably a few "black" movies out there we're supposed to have seen by a certain point in our life, but I didn't get to some of them until the last several years, lol. There are probably others I still haven't seen. But I have seen a few of them, Juice, Menace to Society, and this one managed to get through in the '90's when they were out. I used to live in northern New England for the first part of my life, so, yeah. Low minority population even though we were around a military base. I used to babysit this kid back in the early nineties, of course the whitest kid ever and one of those suburban or otherwise small town white kids who went through his big hood movie and rap phase. It was the funniest thing. Google cousin Oliver from the Brady Bunch and you've got a good picture of this kid π
Thought he was "street" and inner city.

In a way I'd love to watch on VHS which was how I first saw it, but I bought the 4k disc a while ago and never got round to it so I hope it's a good transfer and that it matches the version watched here.

I'm with ya! lol, I'm going to have to dig out an old school VHS for this watchalong, but takes you WAY back to 1991 that way. Man, I'm old. I graduated high school that year. John Singleton has said two of the scenes in this movie were filmed as an homage to Stand By Me. The scene toward the beginning when they are looking at the dead body by the railroad tracks, and the end where you see Doughboy fade out of the scene as you hear about his death.
