For great books about detectives, David Simon's Homicide is certainly a non-fiction classic. As a crime reporter he spent a year following the Homicide unit and ended up writing it up. With his other book The Corner, he did the same following a group of addicts and dealers. Added together they very much form the basis of The Wire.
