Winged Hades?

Marguerite McBee

Okay Casper, pop off on that rendition of the Epic motif

Travis Welty

To me this is like. the consequence of industrialization on the greek gods. Hades wasn’t always an oppressor, did not represent capitalism or greed, but due to industrialization he’s corrupted and changed.

Ratatosk Clarke

To me hades isnt really a villain in this, he’s just incredibly lost. hes definitely an antagonist, just not inherently evil.

Ratatosk Clarke

I will say, in the Percy Jackson version of Hades, he’s actually not the bad guy. In the first book he’s assumed to be the one who stole the lightning bolt, but it’s revealed to be Kronos. Hades ends up just being the reserved uncle for most of the series, and eventually gets brought back into the group. So Percy Jackson is actually a story where he’s not the villain.

Holy Hades, you Nat 20'ed again (not that I'm surprised, you have magic brain). Your voice is always very nice, Casper. When you sing during reactions, it's always a treat. I feel bad for Hades and Pers. He longs for her love, so he's a workaholic. She longs for his love, so she self-medicates and grumps around, whether they're parted or together.

Ah yes, Wet Hades and Mail Hades

music of the sun

You NEED to watch Kaos!! There is literally wet Hades in episode 6!

(Moonlightdaisy) Casper. If you want to see a (mostly) good guy version of Hades, you should watch the show KAOS on Netflix. You will also get to see an incredibly unhinged Zeus (played by Jeff Goldblum). Just..trigger warning in the last episode involving a cat-luckily you don't see what happened, you just know. :(

Enjoyed everything, especially your analysis. Thank you.

To Casper’s point, some of the sources we have are based on sources we don’t even have anymore—some writings from Ancient Greece survived to Roman times, and some to medieval times, and some to today, but we lost many along the way. We know they existed because of references in Roman and medieval writings, but those crumbs are all we have—to say nothing of potential lost meaning by way of translation, which is always subject to the ideals and mores of the translator’s society. There are some things (many things) that we can never know; at a certain point we only have speculations.

Ah yes, I love winged hades 😆

Anais Mitchell talked about Orpheus singing so high because of his divine inspiration, while Hades is a bass because she felt he should have a "subterranean" voice. EXCELLENT catch re: the parallels between Chant and Wedding Song. It's even a version of the same melody. How "bad" Hades is really depends on the actor. Patrick Page plays him with such a keen pain, it's hard to see him as a bad guy. Regardless of interpretation, he's like...Wife Guy to a fault.

Amy Golightly

also damn the reaction to Hades' voice did NOT disappoint. >:3 But yeah, I think Eurydice's "kinda makes you wonder how it feels" - Hades has everything he needs and runs the show and doesn't have to scrimp and suffer the way she has her whole life. What she wants so bad is to have stability and safety. If you'd never had that, I can believe you'd wonder how it feels to be the big boss.

I think it's worth pointing out that the instrumental breaks with the crazy jazzy piano, they're dancing like it's a new orleans jazz funeral, and Hermes has a fancy second line umbrella with beading.

Magnus Taliesin

Pretty sure I'm never getting over Hades's voice and it's been a couple months since I started listening to it lol

QueenofthePieRats

Also, Epic II and Chant are separate songs (at least as far as the Broadway recording goes) that lead into each other. The beginning of Chant is...when they start chanting (/gen).

I don't know how often you see comments, but if you want to see a positive depiction of Hades (and his relationship with Persephone), I highly recommend KAOS on Netflix. They're not the main characters, but they show up multiple times, and the show is an incredible (modern) portrayal of the gods.

Bennett

Is Hades a bass? Oh honey. *Oh honey.*
