haven't read all the comments but yes how well the characters do is based off their rolls some are epic and some are horrible but they all build this amazing story.

This is such a fantastic series, I know you will love it, especially all of the character arcs and future music! Make sure you continue to listen to the songs over the credits, because they will occasionally be full versions of the songs (mostly Scanlan's songs) that you hear snippets of in the episode :)

In the D&D campaign he did parodies of real world songs too, which obv can't be included in this show.

I love this show and everything Critical Role so much <3 I really love that they didn't shy away from the adult humour and gore of the live stream - and from your reaction I'd wager you didn't mind either ;) You're insights into the music was really cool. I mainly watch for the story and the gorgeous animation (and the great voice acting, and the DnD inside jokes, and the winks at the Critters...), but while I appreciated the really good music, I truly didn't pick up on the details! From the little snippets here, I think you'd really enjoy doing a deep dive into the soundtrack. And yes! Sam Riegel is a phenomenal singer and songwriter!!!

Also they have lots books out there that go into the back stories of the villains and characters. And honestly i haven't watched primes season 1 since its release, so it's nice to revist. Thanks

2024-12-11 14:12:11 +0000 UTCYou're absolutely correct that when you play D&D, you *can* absolutely 'see the rolls', and not even just the nat 20's or 1's. You can even recognize some of the spells they cast or even the deities invoked (that had to be renamed for the show because D&D is particular about the use of their intellectual properties). "The Squirts" refers to diarrhea, it's slang XD And there's a visual gag with Vax's belt; when he removes it from his trousers and deploys it, the snake it turns into is missing an eye. i.e. A "One-eyed Trouser Snake", which is *ALSO* slang for, ahem, a certain appendage one has in their 'trousers'. I'm glad to see you having so much fun with this :D And I'm curious to see if it reignites an interest in playing D&D, like it has with SO many people. :3c

2024-12-11 07:26:44 +0000 UTCI don't know if it has been mentioned to you but there is a show coming out soon ( I believe it is early next year) by these same creators, it is an adaptation of their 2nd campaign but it is fully separate from this show so (depending on the speed you plan on watching this show) it could be the next show you watch when you are caught up or you could watch it alongside this one, whatever works best with your schedule. Also think it could be cool for you to guess who is who, it will be another 7 member party (same players/voice actors) so you could try to match up who you think is who, (like Sam is playing this character now, or Laura is playing this character) I dont know what stage you think is the most fair for a game like that, like you just see the art or art + description, or after you hear the voices (assuming Amazon doesnt spoil it). Anyways just mentioning it in case it hadnt been yet, Super excited for the rest of the series!

2024-12-11 05:36:14 +0000 UTCSome of the failed rolls during the Vox Machina campaign are included in the animation, but not all of the goofs are a result of a die roll. A majority of them were written in just for the comedy. Like, for example, Percy's gun jamming or misfiring. If he doesn't roll high enough for an attack, it could break the pepperbox, and he has to spend time in battle fixing it before he can shoot again. Sam Riegel plays Scanlan the bard. He writes a lot of Critical Role's music, most of their campaign theme songs were created by him. Keyleth falling and dropping her staff because of a bad roll did happen in the campaign, I believe it was for a failed athletics or acrobatics skill check. Vex is a ranger, which means she has a class ability that gives her bonuses against a favored enemy; hers are dragons. She has advantage (rolling twice and taking the higher number) on knowledge checks about dragons, and can add extra damage to an attack against one. Dragons have a natural ability to intimidate called a Frightful Presence. If you fail the check, you freeze, which is what happened to Keyleth. Your speed is halved, and any attacks you try to make while you can see the enemy that intimidated you are made at disadvantage (rolling twice and taking the lower number) Vax getting a Nat20 on his thieves tools to immediately unlock the door will never not be funny. A Rouge will do what a Rogue do. Vax asking the General how he was able to sneak up on them while wearing armor is in reference to the rule that wearing plate armor gives you disadvantage on stealth checks. Dragons do protect their lairs, and it's not a good idea to fight them in their lair, because they can turn the very environment against you cuz Lair Actions are nasty. Dragon breath weapons are an area of effect, even if you pass the required dexterity check you still take half of the attack's damage. Poor Percy attempting to keep the group in line and then immediately giving up is hilarious.

2024-12-11 00:05:32 +0000 UTCSo, on how much of what is happening is a roll versus scripted, the show itself is not a beat-for-beat retelling of the stream (which would be SO long if they did), and while the core of the story remains intact, especially alter seasons divert pretty heavily form what was streamed. But the cast of Critical Role are the writers on this show, so they're able to preserve the heart of what's important while also bringing their storytelling experience in to help streamline and honestly make it fit this medium better than a direct re-interpreting. At the same time, they do want to preserve some of the random chance feeling of leaving things to dice rolls, so while they do play into some common storytelling beats and tropes, there will be times it diverts greatly from what a purely plotted-out story with no improvisation inspiration would do. So, no dice in the writers room, but the spirit of the dice lives on, as it were!
