Always nice to hear a father/son talk. I lost my dad last year and there's just something about hearing the dynamic conversate that's oddly comforting. I'm only a handfull of years older than JD, but it seems he's got a good head on his shoulders. And congratulations on not taking out social media. It is a hellacape I wish I could drop put of.

My main experience is applying right out of college, so as an a Engineer with Intern experience and decent GPA, I applied to just under 250 jobs in 2021 before I got a job. In total only 10 to 15 jobs reached out for next phase portions of the interview, with only about a third ever sending a notice that I didnβt get the job. Friends I know applied to about the same for their jobs. Getting a job especially at the intro level can be rough, but best advice is to use connections at any business, donβt be afraid if you have start somewhere lower than you would like, and to use AI buzzwords since so many jobs filter with them. (Can probably look up what language AI filters like).

2024-10-08 02:53:43 +0000 UTCI do some work out in OK for power plants and other energy related work. It's actually pretty tranquil at nights with how flat and quiet it is. The cost of living is pretty low and there are some fine folks out there. Sounds like JD has a good head on his shoulders. That's the kinda guy who just listening to him talk he can live a satisfying life anywhere. Good luck to JD for the last year of college!

2024-10-07 18:35:32 +0000 UTCThe kids are alright. Also surprising to hear any place in Oklahoma as a destination point, but Tulsa is cool. Have friends who live there and have visited a number of times. I know at one point they were pushing to to get remote workers to move there.

2024-10-07 14:50:01 +0000 UTCI found it much easier to get into grad school after working for a few years. And, compared to some of my peers who went right from undergrad to grad, my 3 years in the workforce gave me focus for what I wanted to get out of the program.

2024-10-07 11:13:15 +0000 UTCSome advice for JD as far as dissertation goes (only completed mine 2 years ago) - get as much done as you reasonably can as early as possible. The presentation should be your primary focus as far as the spring term goes. If you plan to do it that way then you've got some wiggle room for if you can't get the main body completed by the end of Winter. Not sure what your faculty recommends but doing my BSc I found it far easier to get the main bit done by February and then do a couple of tweaks with your advisor meetings then and in March at the latest. Also gives you some time to focus on the other modules' assignments for the end of the year which a lot of people neglect
