Painting Black Armour With a Sponge: Step-by-Step Guide

Tried something new with this one - using a makeup sponge to build up a smooth, layered black armour finish. I’ve been experimenting with this clean grimdark style, and the results turned out solid. This step-by-step guide breaks down the process so you can give it a shot too!

Cheers! I start with a white base, then glazed over some thinned slime green to get that glow. After that, I used a darker green, I think it was Lizard Green or Deep Green, and glazed it into the lower part of the eyes for a bit of OSL. All paints are AK!

Cool tutorial would be great for black templars. Could you please quickly go over the paints and method used to paint the green eyes? Thank you!

Thanks! Yep, it works for all colours. The sponge does leave gaps in areas it can’t reach. Sub-assemblies help a lot, but I usually just go in with a brush to coat those spots afterward. I’ve got a good example of this in an upcoming tutorial for grey power armour.

These are great tutorials! Would this technique work for brighter colour marine chapters? I can see the sponge leaves gaps that don’t matter much on black but what if it was an Imperial Fist or Blood Angel?

It's from the Primaris Infiltrators kit. Also comes in the Phobos Strike Team

Love this look. May I ask where the helmet is from?
