Episode 279: RoboCop

The latest in our media ’n games series; this one's kind of a companion piece to the episode on The Running Man we did last year. Henry Gilbert joins me and Bob to discuss the magic of RoboCop; and by "magic" I mean "bloody giblets and ultraviolence making a political point". A good time is guaranteed for all! Unless you live in Verhoeven's vision of Detroit, I guess.

Art by Amanda Pruitt, and editing by Greg Leahy.

Loved this episode! ED-209 = erectile distinction. At least that's how I've read it.

Good to know, thanks!

I'm going to be that guy: It's pronounced VerhOOven. Same sound as "Boot". The "oi" sound will not be heard in Dutch. In German you'll hear it with pretty much anything spelled with "eu", such as "Euler" or "Deutschklubmitglieder".

The Gameboy RoboCop theme is legitimately fantastic. Brooker also used it as the theme to his documentary 'How Videogames Changed the World' - it's on YouTube if anyone wants to look it up!

My favorite Robocop reference was when Screech became him during a dream sequence on Saved By The Bell.

Robocop was the first film I got into where I pretended to be older than I was. I was 15 at the time and it was an 18 cert. I remember shaking in the bus home after being traumatised by the violence but I still loved it. Also, Gameboy Robocop has an odd place in early 90s UK culture as the Jonathan Dunn theme tune was used on a very popular TV ad. https://youtu.be/3JcYjQ9laTE Charlie Brooker also chose that tune for one of his Desert Island Discs picks...

No E-SWAT mention at things inspired by RoboCop? (Which to be fair practically the only things I remember about the game are the boot-up "E-SWAT!" voice and the helicopter boss of the first level)

Hey, ease up on RoboCop 3 will ya? I watched it for the first time recently and really enjoyed it. The script is fun, the acting is solid, it nails the aesthetic, the villain chews the scenery, and the practical effects are great. It's a bit schmalzy and derivative, but compared to the lifeless, soulless action movie garbage we got in the 2000s (I'm looking at you, XXX franchise), RoboCop 3 is a goddamn masterpiece

Retronauts on Robocop? Yes, please!
