Episode 450: Super Mario Bros. (The 1993 Movie)

In 1993, Hollywood did the seemingly impossible by releasing the first true video game adaptation: Super Mario Bros. And to put it simply, things didn't exactly go as planned. Thanks to studio meddling, fired directors, injured actors, and compromised visions, Super Mario Bros. lurched into theaters in May of 1993, and quickly retreated in shame when the general public didn't know what to make of it. But are there hidden gems lurking underneath this film's fungus-covered exterior? On this episode, join Bob Mackey, Ray Barnholt, and Ryan Hoss and Steven Applebaum of Super Mario Bros. The Movie Archive as the crew explores this fascinating mess of a motion picture. Listen in, and learn to embrace mustache-free Luigi!

Strange I didn't notice anything wrong with the audio, maybe Overcast fixed it on the fly somehow. I remember reading about the SMB movie in Nintendo Power and nothing I saw made me think it'd be good. The Goombas in particular were an instant 'nope'. My family didn't see movies until they came to the $1 theater or came out on video. Even then, I never sat down and watched it. I did watch the Rifftrax episode of the Super Mario Bros. That felt like the correct way to experience this movie because otherwise I think my head would've exploded.

Maybe you can have everyone run audio tests a few days in advance, in case they need to order new equipment or have their's repaired?

David Louis

Thanks Bob!

I can probably do that in the future, but I'm not expecting it to happen again for a long time.

Bob Mackey

Would it be possible to add a disclaimer upfront warning of poor audio for any future episodes where this happens? It would be helpful to know ahead of time so I can adjust my expectations when listening.

Jason Lee

Hi folks, one of the three guests had less-than-stellar audio, and our editor cleaned it up as much as possible. Unfortunately we don't have complete control over recording conditions with so many remote guests, and we're just as frustrated as you the few times this happens. Thanks for your understanding.

Bob Mackey

I think the guest’s mic had some kind of auto-volume adjustment going on which makes it a real rough listening experience.

What gives guys? Usually the audio quality is spot on, but this one needed some TLC before release.

Ryan Atkins

Yeah, one of the guest mics keeps cutting out or smth

Couldn't make it all the way through.

Yeah it's real bad

Samuel Clemmons

Yeah, really hard to make out a lot of what is being said.

The audio on this one is pretty bad

A few years ago I had an odd encounter with the SMB movie. I was working on a webseries called Mario Warfare (Imagine SMB if it was an action parody) and one of our major filming locations was owned by a guy who did some art and props on the SMB movie. Apparently the bench I was trying (and failing) to get comfortable on between takes was once stood on by Dennis Hopper as King Koopa.
