Episode 627: Mortal Kombat 4

ominous gong sound Welcome back, Patrons. Diamond Feit here, returning to the well (or "pit" if you prefer) with another podcast about a famous fighting game franchise. When we last checked in with Mortal Kombat, the series hit the big time just as the seams began to show. What happened when they turned to 3D graphics? Well, we got Mortal Kombat 4, the last installment made for the arcades.

Joining me once again are Stuart Gipp and Long Live Mortal Kombat author David L. Craddock. We run down Midway's difficulties of dealing with new technology, internal strife, and the absolute drama of those ending cinematics.

I will say that this and Armageddon are the MKs I played the least, and I honestly didn’t get back into the series fully until MK 9 and that whole stretch of 9, 10, 11 is the best the series has ever been, in my humble anonymous internet opinion!

I remember Mortal Kombat Gold received a scathing review in EGM. One reviewer said "You know what I like about this game? Nothing." Weirdly, the review makes no mention of the crashes or bugs. I definitely believe an MK collection with 1, 2, 3, UMK3, and MKT would sell gangbusters (although they really should've put it out like 10 years ago). The series is peak 90's video game nostalgia. I find it hard to believe they're difficult to emulate, MAME/Retroarch seems to handle them just fine. Maybe it's something related to using the actors' likenesses?
