The white elephant woman literally says in her message to the OP "my income shouldn't mean I can't have nice things" which reads to me as "even if I can't afford a nice gift for white elephant I deserve one from you" which is shitty and is kinda stealing when you had promised to spend a certain amount.

I think with stuff like secret Santa, at least with friend groups, you can be thoughtful with the gifts. With white elephant, on the other hand, Joseph is 100% right, someone's feelings are going to get hurt due to the nature of white elephant. I definitely think OP is the asshole and honestly don't think what jenn did was that bad tbh. I think it can feel shitty getting the bad white elephant gift, but at the same time, OP knows jenn is struggling, so it should feel good to see a friend get something good. Then complaining about the friend and essentially getting her kicked out lead me to thinking they were 100% the asshole

If this wasn’t one is the asshole or the other, I’d give an everyone sucks here. I just personally can’t get over participating in something you know you can’t. I just hate lying in general, but I get why you all voted that the poster was the asshole, she could’ve handled it more maturely

This might be a big assumption but I felt the lady who gave the hot chocolate was akin to a kid just wanting to fit in with her friends who were ACTIVELY excluding her with the two tier system.

I had and am still fighting with the same problem at about the same age (caused by major health issues), but I finally just swallowed the pill and got a job, because my condition got mild enough to allow me to do so. I feel this man, but this is not the way.
