Overanalyzing Avatar: The Siege of The North Part 1

Comments

Yooooo, this ended up being a long comment! I know it was bull-headed and suicidal but I feel like not a lot of people really appreciate Zuko in this episode. Like, this is one of his finest moments as a character and antagonist. He swims long distances in freezing cold water. Is able to hold is breath a long as a fucking sea lion. Fire bend UNDERWATER. Best Katara in battle. Get the Avatar! Then scale a fucking ice cliff while carrying said Avatar before Appa can even show up. And this is while still recovering from being nearly exploded by Zhao. The show DOES NOT make light of Zuko's one-track-mind. His determination. Motherfucker is like the Terminator. He'll take on all the punishment the world sends his way. He will not stop until his last breath. THAT'S Zuko's strength. Azula may be a natural combat talent. Zhao might have tons of battle ships. Zuko is... crazy desperate. Which then makes you realize (especially in the next episode) that while it's his greatest strength. The thing that makes him a threat to his enemies. It also is his greatest undoing. Because it also makes him a danger to himself. His one-track-mind is easy to root for because we've all been there. But the show makes it clear how unhealthy it is. Makes you question how worth it it all is. Destroying yourself for "that one thing" that you think will solve everything. This always blew my mind as a kid. Because the show somehow got me cheering for Zuko to actually succeed for once, but then brought me right back to reality in what follows. I hope you cover it when it comes. Good video.
