Seeing Lin having her bending taken away is pretty brutal. As one of the only characters that is written well, most of the audience cares about her at this point despite how little screen time she has. She also defines herself by her job, involving bending, and her family, she is the daughter of the greatest earth bending in recent history. It is a devastating sacrifice and the show to really under cuts it. With the introduction of Iroh II. And then nobody talks about it. We don’t even know where Lin is during the rest of the fighting. Maybe she was held for interrogation? Oh and for that scene where Pema asks Lin to help with Meelo, it is a really dumb idead to make your house/family guard do childcare when an attack is expected. Why distract your guard when she should be really and focussed? Was this some wired power play? Make my husbands ex care my our kid? Pepa is not a trained warrior but she should still be smart enough not to distract Lin right before an attack.

The first Kyoshi book says that new born babies born in the fire nation get tested for fire bending. Probably with in a day or two of being born. It is specifically emphasized that the breath of a fire bender matters to the test. Watching the show multiple times breath seems to be important to all four bending types. I would imagine an unborn baby cant bending because they can’t breathe yes. Once they are able to breath air then they have to potential to bend. Side note, how horrific if a baby got stuck part way out and stated fire bending sparks and stuff.
