This morning I woke up to multiple reports that a Russian Su-25 had been shot down near Orikhiv in the Zaporizhia Oblast.
We almost did a Flash Report and a tweet, but the video only showed an airplane being shot down.
Russian forces released drone surveillance video, and reported it was a Ukrainian Mig-29 that was shot down as the debate continued.
Aerospace experts were able to prove this wasn't a Mig-29, but a Su-27 due to the engines. The community has settled on this is a Su-27.
So which side was it?
Well this gets really fun. The small piece of tail section has some blue paint, but that more closely aligns with Russian livery. The stabilizers on Ukrainian Su-27 are white - BUT - parts of the plane are colored blue.
BUT - the remaining wing structure is clearly gray, and that is Russian livery. Ukraine does not operate "fighter plane gray" Su-27s.
Welcome to our world.
This is why we don't report on a lot of things and try to be correct over first.
What can we confirm? An Su-27 crashed near Orikhiv. Video evidence indicates the plane was not shot down, but experienced a significant mechanical failure, and crashed. The pilot did not eject. We cannot confirm which belligerent operated the aircraft.
