Russia-Ukraine SITREP A for 18 MAY 2023 23:59* PDT - Russians Move Reserves to Bakhmut, at the Expense of Everywhere Else

Are you new to our Patreon? You need to click on the link to download the PDF attachment, which has links to all the videos referenced in the podcast.

This is Report 388, which is 45 pages in a condensed format and combat only.

Important: Until further notice, we are moving to a condensed format for Situation Reports due to increasing activity in support of the looming Ukrainian offensive. The news cycle is moving too fast to do one report every 24 hours. Up to three Situation Reports will up done a day, and there may be a significant increase in flash reports. We will also do live streams if the situation becomes dynamic. Once the operational tempo slows down, we will move back to full reports.

What's the big story? Another day, another missile and drone attack.

What's the second story? Bakhmut holds, and Russian forces have little combat potential left across the rest of Ukraine.

Thank you Malcontent team for this report. I look forward to reading it each day. To me, these actions of the aggressor hardly even seem like actions of a leader who seeks peace. Why the many discussions of well-meaning leaders wanting to mediate peace talks between Putin and Zelensky? Why? What words/talk will the aggressor listen to? I support the people of Ukraine and their right to every centimeter of the original borders of their sovereign land. How can we stand to live in a world where people like Russia do what they are doing to the people and land of Ukraine, and think they can get away with it? It makes my heart hurt and yet, my heart rejoices with every success reported. Thank you for the news. Thank you. It makes a difference. It really does.

I noted with interest your paragraph referring to a report of a full Brigade being trained and equipped in Sweden...I've researched The Times of London and The Financial Times of UK and could not find the referenced article. Can you please be more specific of the publication and date of this article ?

Seems to be a large uptick in fuel and train/railway attacks. Counteroffensive is definitely going to begin soon. Starting to feel like the tactical counteroffensive in Bakhmut is another shaping operation to draw more forces away from were Ukraine really wants to go.

That sums it up. It is also important to acknowledge though that Russia continues to expend artillery in Bakhmut at an unsustainable rate that could hinder other fronts.

Wagner is using artillery to destroy the last remaining heavy concrete structures that the defenders could set up in to fire and take cover. Thus what is left is open ground. Defending open ground would remove the defenders advantage that Ukraine enjoys. Wagner on the other hand is more willing to take casualties so they can prevail in this situation. Also Wagner spams artillery more than Ukraine so this gives them an edge as well. I am probably missing something else too.

Thank you for another detailed and carefully-considered report. I’m very happy to hear that Ukraine is doing well in many ways, including liberating some areas around Bakhmut. But why do they continue their retrograde movement within the city?
