Finland shares a 1,300-kilometer-long sparsely populated border with the Russian Federation and lost about 10% of its national territory during the 1939 Winter War with the Soviet Union. The Winter War was launched as part of the August 1939 Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact between Stalin and Hitler, which partitioned the Western and Eastern European continent between the two dictators.
