With PMC Wagner making gains in the city center, the next main defensive line is along the railroad tracks that bisect the central district and industrial area from the western part of the city.
The team believes that Ukrainian forces are in a retrograde operation to the railroad tracks, which so far have proven in the north to be a formidable defensive location. Ukrainian forces appear to be avoiding the brutal street fighting they employed in Severodonetsk through most of June 2022.
We maintain that Russia will continue to expend resources to capture Bakhmut at all costs - short of CBRN - a position unchanged since late September 2022.

"Formidable defensive location" sounds good to me. They don't have too many options.
