Chapter 44: Twilight Manor
Added 2023-07-13 14:37:42 +0000 UTCWhen it comes to training, I learned something. To make it more effective, the student should be able to find the answer themselves. This is how Kiyoshiro-sanâthe swordsman who honed my sixth senseâtaught me.
Unfortunately, I am not talented in mystic swordsmanship. I could not trigger mysteries in that way. Only with magic techniques could I do so.
âThis backfired.â I deadpanned inwardly. âWallenstein-san is just as crazy as me.â
âWoah?! So youâre her training partner?â Hiryute-san asked.
âYes. I couldnât pass on the opportunity to fight level fives.â
Thousand ElfâLefiya Viridisâlooked at me as if she heard something preposterous.
âArenât you a level two? How could you fight someone like Aiz?â
Brimming curiosity could be seen in Hiryute-sanâs eyes.
âItâs magic. I developed something to withstand stronger enemies. I never thought itâll be this strong after heaving falna.â
âThatâs some insane magic, then! How did you even come up with it?â
âCircumstances. We falna-less magicians are already weak enough. We need something to compensate for that weakness.â
âSirius-san⊠Did you learn it by yourself?â Viridis-san asked.
âTechnically, I did. But, itâs more of a joint effort if you ask me.â
âJoint effort?â
The basis for the [Robustness] spell came from the magic built upon by generations. I did not lie in that part at the very least. What I am and will be saying are half-truths.
I donât want to stand out even further.
âAre you aware of the situation outside Orario, Viridis-san?â
âUhm⊠A little bit.â She replied. âIf you are talking about magic⊠Itâs less effective than acquired magic.â
From the books and Eina-san, I managed to draw Gekaiâs situation in my head. Congenital magicâman-made magicâis starting to appear. They are manifested with rituals and ceremonies, just like my worldâs magic.
The major difference between the two, however, is that their growth is halted. People of this world chose to use magic from falna and grimoires. Nobody paid much attention to the tedious spells that are far weaker than the two.
Thus, it led to this situation after a thousand years.
âDuring my⊠travels, I came upon the spell and learned it.â
âI seeâŠâ
I continued to talk with the two girls until we reached a towering gate. Two adventurers are posted as gatekeepers.
âTiona-san! This isâŠâ
âDâSirius.â
âSirius?!â
A familiar reaction occurred.
âG-greetings!â
âYou donât need to be so formalâŠâ I commented.
âI-I see!â
Seeing the lively familia home, I felt slightly envious.
*****
Inside the Twilight Manorâs library, Riviera is entangled with something troublesome. After treating the wounded Aiz, she began lecturing her.
âJust what did come to your mind? You shouldnât go missing like that! Why didnât you tell us first?!â
âSorryâŠâ
Aiz felt a deja vu. In her early days, she was always reprimanded by Riveria.
âI want to become strongerâŠâ
âSigh⊠Going alone to the fortieth floor alone will not make you stronger. Youâre placing yourself in danger!â
âBut thatâs what he didâŠâ
She recalled Nobuâs words. He became strong when he constantly fought. Meanwhile, Finn said that âintuitionâ only activates with danger. Combining the two, Aiz thought that constant near-death battles will let her have that âintuitionâ.
âHe? Who?â
âSirius.â
âSirius?â
Aiz revealed the sparring she had with him for over a week. She told Riveria how he utilized techniques on the same level as Finn.
âI seeâŠâ
Riviera left the library for a while, leaving Aiz alone. She stared blankly in the bookshelves as she couldnât understand the mistake she did.
For her, diving into the lower floors without preparations is completely normal.
âItâs how he did itâŠâ
Meanwhile, another meeting occurred outside.
âGreetings, Lady Riveria.â
Wearing his black suit, Nobu did an elegant bow. He is currently in his formal modeâthe one he used for parties and public gatherings.
âI have been informed of the situation.â He added, âI did not expect her to dive a dungeon, though I am also at fault.â
Riveria was momentarily surprised at his etiquette. Only those form royalty could act like this.
âWhat did you tell her?â
âThat⊠I hinted her about âsixth senseâ. It exists outside the five olfac⊠senses and could detect danger and bloodlust.â
âItâs similar to Finnâs intuitionâŠâ
It is not Riveriaâs first time to hear about âsixth senseâ. It could be acquired by strong adventurers who often ventured in deadly situations.
âI plan on âhelpingâ Wallenstein-san sharpen her sixth sense.â
âThatâs impossibleâŠâ
Unexpectedly, Tiona voiced her doubts first.
âHey, thatâs only gained through bloody battles!â She defended her prior words.
Every time the sixth sense goes off, it is always during a close battle. It could let someone dodge a deadly strike by mistake or feel the said attack coming. Of course, it is not omnipotent. The sharper it is, the stronger the feeling.
Nobu met her gaze and felt something deeper from the carefree girl.
âIn most cases, yes. However, thereâs another way to sharpen it through training.â
âTraining?â
âIt is a special training developed by my mentor. He came from outside Orario, so itâs totally fine if you havenât heard of him.â
Riveria sensed that there are no falsehood in his words. She might not be a goddess, but she could see through falsehoods. Sheâs as beautiful as a goddess, too.
Fortunately, Nobu gained a resistance after living in Orario for half a month. He would no longer show his âflusterâ outside.
âSuch a training existsâŠâ
âItâs the benefit of traveling, Viridis-san.â Nobu followd up inwardly, âTraveling worlds, that is.â
âOh..! I want to join there too!â
Tiona suddenly clung to his arm. Nobu could feel her body through his suit.
âHiryute-sanâŠâ
âYou can just call me Tiona!â
â...Tiona-san. You can join Wallenstein-san in the training. But, doesnât it bother you? You knowâŠâ
Just like other amazon, Tiona wore scantily. It is barely enough to cover everything that should be hidden.
âWhat do you mean..?â
She cutely tilted her head in confusion. For her, the concept of shame did not exist.
âTiona⊠Sirius might not be accustomed to close contact with others.â
Thankfully, Riviera is here for the rescue.
âIs that so?â
To that, Nobu nodded with a troubled smile.
âSorry! I didnât know~!â
âItâs alright. Just⊠Tiona-san should be more mindful. There are many guys out there who might take advantage of you.â
âAh, those guys? Donât worry!â Tiona proclaimed proudly. âI have beaten them up!â
âMakes senseâŠâ
Lefiya looked at Nobuâs side profile.
âHeâs considerate⊠No, what am I thinking!â
Nobuâs deadly charm began unfolding itself.
âWe can talk about that training later. For now, can you talk to Aiz? Sheâs not listening to what I am sayingâŠâ
Riveria was helpless in this regard. Sheâs like a mother who already got angry, yet her children wouldnât listen. However, it is due to Aiz using Nobuâs name as a shield. Her persistence doesnât budge at all.
She and Nobu entered the library once more. The two girls were left waiting outside.
âSirius..!â
âHello, Wallenstein-san. Iâve heard you caused some trouble.â
âTrouble?â
He began explaining why diving into the dungeon unprepared is a mistake.
âDidnât you tell me to do so?â She asked.
âWhen?â
âYou hinted it when you pointed that weapon yesterday.â
âAre you sure about that?
âThatâŠâ
Persuasion had been one of Nobuâs strength. It is mandatory to convince strong people for the shitty future he sawâboth in his world and Gekai.
âActually, we were supposed to begin a special training tomorrow.â
âTraining?â
Upon explaining everything, Aiz felt embarrassed. Now, she realized how she jumped to her conclusion!
âItâs like that..?! NnâŠâ
Her childish inner self hid her face between her knees. Similarly, her ears began turning red.
âIâm sorry⊠for causing this⊠Riveria⊠and Sirius.â
âItâs fine as long as you understand it.â
After sighing, Riveria thanked him.
âThank you for the help.â
âItâs not a big deal, Lady Riveria. Iâm partly at fault here.â
âStillâŠâ
âThen, how about thisâŠâ
Knowing she is determined to owe him a favor, Nobu used this chance to fulfill one of his future regretsâand to gain more allies in the impending future.
âWe can exchange knowledge regarding magic. I am interested on how you view it.â
Riveria saw the scholarly spirit blazing in his eyes. It was then did she know that they share a common trait.
âItâs still early.â Nobu came up with an idea. âShould we start doing the training today?â
*****
âHmâŠâ
I did not mind the âdubiousâ gazes sent by Lady Riveria and Viridis-san.
â...A ritual?â
âPartially. Magic is a ritual to go against the worldâs known principles.â
I held a staff embedded with a blue gem. With the gem, I drew a magic circle on the groundâthe blue gem is being dirtied by soil. To this world, they cherish their staves. For modern magicians, it is nothing but a tool.
âI never expected for it to fit.â
The gem was something I got from my first murder. It conducts mana pretty well. After embedding it into the staff, it became the âcoreâ for the staffâs [Preservation] and [Connection] spell. Simply, it prolongs the duration of mana drawn to the real-world.
âThree circles⊠They are interconnected in a complex manner. This canât be often seen.â
Lady Riveria saw through one of the spellâs capability.
âWhere did you learn this?â
âFrom an old man when I was traveling. He might be a mage of some organization. Altena, perhaps.â
âThat explains it. For him to pass his complete inheritanceâŠâ
He is on the verge of death.
I saw her looks briefly change into pity.
Then again, I learned this spell from Kazamitsu-sanâs records. He was dead up until my sixth iteration. Suimei was the one who brought it up during my training with Kiyoshiro-san.
âDone.â
It took five minutes to complete the magic circle. I could have done this through [Memorize] daggers, but I am conserving money. This is how I did Liliâs training inside [Aliceâs Wonderland].
âTempus cum cunctus mendacium versura veritas.â (With time, all lies turn into truths.)
Mana flowed from my hand into the gem before the magic circle was activated. Its entire radius turned into a white floor.
âThis will be the training ground.â I said. âYou can step into it now.â
âWoah? Whatâs this?â
HirâTiona-san tried touching the ground.
âIt feels like a floor!â
Knock-!
She even tried knocking on it.
âYou might break it, Tiona-san. The spellâs quite fragile.â
âGot it!â
Someone else followed her actions.
âHow is this possible⊠Thereâs no texture of grass at all! Did it turn into something else?â
Viridis-san also examined it. I could see she has attainments when it comes to magic. I heard she was taught by Lady Riveria which explains everything.
âIt should be an illusion. Isnât it, Sirius?â
âYes. This spell is an illusion. Just like any other spellsâŠâ
Bam-!
I struck the butt of my staff to the ground. Swiftly, the white floor partially turned into grass before being repaired by the spell.
âItââs quite fragile. Thatâs why it does not serve any purpose for practical combat. However, it is good for training.â
With a thought, a harmless ray of light passed through Tiona-san. It turned red as a result.
âThe goal here is to not get hit by the lights. It turns green if you dodged it completely. Meanwhile, it turns red if you get hit.â
âThatâs it..?â
I answered Wallenstein-sanâs concerns.
âDo you want to try it first?â
âUn.â
A ray of light aimed from her right arm. She easily dodged it. Then, two rays came at different directions. She easily dodged them too. Then it turned into three, four, fiveâŠ
When ten different rays appeared, Wallenstein-san couldnât dodge one of them. It turned red.
âThis looks fun!â
Tiona-san seems excited upon seeing the âgameâ.
âHow did itâŠâ
âEven a level five could get hit by attacks. More so, leven ten is far more difficult to accomplish than level one. The speed of lights increases. The angles of each attacks become more complex as well.â
Kiyoshiro-san stated oftentimes that swordsmen should be able to reach beyond their strike zone. This is complimented by his other statement of them being able to âseeâ beyond what could normally be sensed.
These became the mantra for my physical training.
âI see⊠If I clear all of them, will I become stronger?â She asked.
âOf course you will.â
I kept the fact that there are thirty levels available. They are made based on a monster who could easily split skyscrapers and another monster who should be able to dodge all of them with his special eyes.
Even I am only at the thirteenth level. My sixth sense catches the impending rays but my body couldnât catch up.
âCan I go next? I want to go next!â
âYes, yesâŠâ
I felt a foreboding upon looking at the two girls.
*****
âLetâs see⊠This is a peculiar spell. It mostly relies on myths and lesser than physical principles. Is this a gravitational spell?â
â...Thatâs right.â
Riviera lost count of times she got surprised of his magical knowledge. With a single glance, he could understand the purpose behind the spell.
âIt has a very long cast time. Hm⊠Itâs effective for defending against a siege. As long as itâs a frontal confrontation, the spell could turn the tides.â
â...â
After the girlsâ training, it was the promised knowledge exchange. Nobu got the chance to contrast his spells and look out for Gekaiâs magic specialty. As expected, he found many new things.
The same went for Riveria. His insights are shocking to say the least. Finn mentioned him having the chance of breaking past the magic limit just like her and Lefiya.
Riviera could control the intensity of her three magics, extending her available spells to nine. They are balanced in offense, defense, and recovery. As for Lefiya, she is the true cheat.
She could cast every elven magic she knew, hence her âThousand Elfâ title. Although, looking at the boy who is seriously writing on his booklet, Riviera felt another anomaly appearing.
âItâs not this⊠Myths, myths⊠Ah.â
Nobu learned something. In his world, the beings known as âgodsâ did not exist naturally. They were âgiven lifeâ through the peopleâs beliefs. Once enough belief gathers, âgodsâ are born into the spirit realm.
Meanwhile, Gekai has gods who existed even before the humans. They are natural unlike his worldâs gods. The difference between the two caused the myth-powered spells to overpower normal spells, and so does falna-given spells.
(A/N: Acquired Magic with Falna>Congenital Magic without falna>Normal magic)
âUsing such spells forms a connectionâŠâ
Nobu snapped from his thoughts. Doing something like this could seem disrespectful to Riveria.
âIâm sorry about that. I got too serious all of a sudden.â
âNo, itâs fine.â
Unbeknownst to Nobu, his studiousness even reached out Riveria.
*****
As Nobu continued to live in Gekai, his home world did not stop. The network of contacts he knew started to show their capabilities one-by-one.
A magic circle glowed beneath Kazamitsuâs feet. The next moment, he was briefly sent into a dark tunnel.
âThis is it⊠The pathway to other worlds.â
He understood the composition of the spell. Nobu used the derived version of it, which is <Void Transference>. Right now, they are using the original <World Transference> from Louiseâs spell and Suimeiâs transportation circle.
The said spell is modified to automatically recall him.
As he explored the dark tunnel, a series of disconnected space went through him. It threatened to cut his body. He used his <Mana Furnace> to withstand them. When the spell started wearing off, he was forced back to his world.
âI found nothing. What a pity.â
{Correcting the recorded coordinates⊠Successful.}
{Generating possible sets of coordinatesâŠ}
The voice was cut off.
{Several more sets of coordinates will be prepared. Are you alright?}
âItâs nothing. We should continue.â
Once a week, Kazamitsu helps Miku in verifying the proper coordinates. That was the only thing they are lacking. The prior coordinates they caught ensured a good chance the world theyâll discover will be the one where Nobu currently is.
{Iinitiating the 8th attemptâŠ}
