Yack O' Lantern

Greetings adventurers!

Okay, it’s rare for me to give away an item, but please if anyone would like a talking pumpkin that won’t stop making puns and random jokes about everyone that passes by, stop by the emporium today. I’ll pay you to take it away from here. I’m sure it has some redeeming qualities that I have yet to find, but I don’t know that I can tolerate another day of this. Maybe you can use it as a gag gift for that special someone in your life that you want to annoy to no end. Maybe you have access to a deep ocean to throw it into, maybe you know where there’s a cavernous pit that could use an addition. Whatever it is, just get it away from me.

Our patrons get early access to all of these items as well as additional formats that are easily usable in both physical and online play for D&D and Pathfinder 2E. Additionally they get high-res art exports, easy to use text exports, behind the scenes updates, and a lot more.

If that strikes your fancy, consider becoming a Patron

Design notes from Matthew:

I just love the halloween season and one of the most impressive things out there to me are the people that carve those ridiculously ornate pumpkin faces that look like over the top cartoonish characters. They just look like they’re something out of the Haunted Mansion or something like that. I love them so dearly that I thought it would be fascinating to see what one of those would look like in a TTRPG magic item. I had been saving this idea up for a bit, knowing I wanted it for spooky season and I’m so glad we could make it now.

In the 5E version, writing in sentience and personality is a bit less straightforward than I would otherwise like it to be. That said, in recent rule sets, we’ve got a bit more definition on how to define them, so I’ve been trying to work it in a bit more. I wanted to give it personality, typical function as a lantern, and then just one more little thing and I think the ability to cut off reactions for a turn can be quite interesting. It could be used to reposition for example, or silence a spellcaster at least on verbal components. I like the idea of something that you need to figure out the uses for rather than them being obvious.

In the PF2E version, there’s a lot more definition of what a sentient item needs to be set up like so that presented an easy base to build off of. One thing that I really enjoy though, is the fascinated condition. I’ve been working my way through the conditions and trying to find interesting ways to use them and this seemed like a really fun way to make the item powerful without allowing it to take over a combat. I hope players will love it all the same.

We’re not done with spooky month yet! Next week we’ve got a wicked combination of creature and item to round off the spookiest month of the year and we can’t wait to put it in your hands. It probably will stick around your dreams a bit longer than you’d like though.

We highly encourage you to join our Discord server where you’ll get access to exclusive channels that have sneak peeks, behind the scenes chatter, and more.
