Greetings adventurers!

I’ve always been impressed by those that work with birds of prey. They call the art falconry, but it extends to farm more than just falcons. One of the most impressive things about it is that, unlike the relationship of man and dog, the relationship of man and bird of prey is more a negotiation than a command. It’s about understanding what the bird demands and not asking too much. It’s about forging a relationship and letting the mutualism carry things. It’s about letting the bird know that you will not ask too much of it and that it can trust you to to serve it as well. I find that quite charming.

Design notes from Matthew:
I can’t say it’s going to be all of the items coming out, but I’ve had a renewed interest in making more low level items recently. You would think that higher powered things would be the difficult ones to design, but I actually find the limitations of lower levels force you to be a lot more creative in your writing than the unabashed power that higher levels can dish out. Thankfully, I consider myself somewhat creative and enjoy the challenge.
In the 5E version of this, one limit that I came across is having to balance around the pass/fail nature of a save. I wasn’t really enjoying the math and how it would negate part of the utility of the item as the level of the character increased. Instead, I thought about what actually would happen to someone fighting off a bird harassing them and figured it would just be extremely distracting when trying to land blows. In which case, a flat penalty with a bit extra on crits made a more fun item.
For the PF2E version, well now we have varying degrees of success, so this was actually a lot more straightforward to write. I just upped the severity of the issue the worse you roll on it. If you wanted to make greater versions of this for yourself, it would be quite simple to up the DC and just up the clumsy numbers to match the appropriate level as you go. I kind of like making it simple for you all to modify as needed.

This idea came to me on a random night at 12:30 AM where I immediately sent it to Fernando so that I didn’t lose it. It’s funny how sometimes the most fun ideas come at the most random of moments. How I got to falconry, who knows? At least it made for a fun item.
