Added 2021-12-13 18:39:42 +0000 UTCThis shot shows a U.E. city inside a terra-formed lava tube on Earth’s Moon. There are supposedly thousands of lava tubes on the Moon. Due to the low gravity, some are even large enough to fit multiple cities the size Manhattan along their width (you read that correctly, WIDTH, not length). You could seal off these huge nation sized pockets under the Moon’s surface, fill them with breathable air using the ice deposits in them, and redirect sunlight from the lunar surface. Suddenly the Moon looks like a much more enticing target for Humanity’s early expansion than Mars, huh? Not to mention the inexpensive access to Lunar orbit could help to build some serious megastructures like O’Neil cylinders, with the right infrastructure.

Funny that you should say that, I’m reading through that trilogy currently, I’m on green mars now. Yeah the idea has been in the scientific community for quite some time, I know that Kim reads a lot of the literature so it’s no suprise that it would make it into his book too. It’s like the idea of colonising the astroids and turning them into natural O’Neil cylinders, it’s too good of an idea to pass up!
