REACTION to WEEEKLY - PLAY GAME: AWAKE DOCUMENTARY FILM EPs.01&02

Definitely! After School will forever be such a heartwarming song that makes me remember to be grateful for precious moments. It really lets us take a moment to think about them instead of just brushing off those memories. I also feel like Zig Zag will be a song that I'm going to appreciate for a very long time. "The world is full of questions It’s unexpected And that’s why it’s new and fun Even if I falter, even if I’m clumsy, I want to enjoy it as I go I’m a little scared, but I want to be brave" Like, I know those words will resonate with me no matter how old I get or how much I've lived. Life will always feel like we're on a rollercoaster, and we've no control over how fast it goes or how many turns it makes, but we can still get through it.

Whoa appreciate the MV details, didn't think of stuff like the Venus/Mars things. Regarding the "After School" lyric "You feel like another me"... that's an interesting interpretation of that whole lyric because the sentiment that I think most got from it is that it was a really sweet way of the narrator phrasing the way she felt about her friend(s)/friendship(s), like we're so alike and click so well that you seem like another me: "I can’t forget your face back then We melt into each other, you feel like another me rather than a friend I’m flying on my shaking heart" That song, taken on the face value of the lyrics, I think will always stand apart from lore just because of how incredibly endearing and nostalgia inducing they are. They seem to speak to our rose tinted vision of growing up in a way that few Kpop songs have (maybe Red Flavor comes close?).

Yep, the mvs mostly show their lore in its imagery (the planets, zig zags, 12:12s, character cameos), lyrics, and interactions. The cat is Uni (in After School you can see its name tag while it's on the cloud). DONA is the creator, the snail, who has its own account on weverse, twitter and I think maybe fancafe too. Usually the name has the O in the shape of Saturn/a planet with a ring so that it looks more like D/NA or DNA. Plus, Dona is the one messaging them, like in Holiday Party. Uni is Dona's messenger, and that's why Uni is in Soojin's arms in AF before they go through that portal, to lead them there. But, yeah, the mvs are very very very school life until Ven Para. What helps is the lyrics of their title tracks allude to their true selves. Granted, they have double meanings to fit with the song, but it's there. The Tag Me bridge "I feel strange to the ordinary world" (since they can't remember who they are) plus "Once I show up, Timeline becomes boisterous" (like the timeline they live in), Zig Zag talking about "How many me's are inside of me?", After School mentioning "You feel like another me", plus in Holiday Party they literally went to Mars but also Soojin says "I'll stop the clock" and in the mv you can see on the computer that the time is frozen to 12:12. Not to mention the choreos. Lots of spaceships, planet orbit patterns, plus Jihan and Zoa's cupid/arrow choreo. Ven Para is still tricky, because in an interview Monday said that them during the Prologue Film is them dreaming, but the album is called Play Game: Awake and they're supposed to have finally remembered they're actually the lords of their planets (hence the temple and all). All we know is that there was a darkness trying to extinguish the Sun, but Weeekly didn't let it happen. Other songs to look at are: Universe, My Earth, Uni, and La Luna. There could be more related to the lore. Right now the hope is that if Ven Para is like Tag Me, the next comeback will go back to showing more of the story like Zig Zag did. And I know this is already super long, but if you want to know another detail of the story, you can see the interactions between Jihan and Zoa. Zig Zag has that iconic/surprising moment where Zoa pulls her close and then we see them having dates in AS and HP. This is probably because they are literally Venus and Mars (aka the lovestory), and so they have that connection in the Weeeklyverse But yeah, this is stuff you only know if you look for it. The mvs are mostly just fun to watch, so it took a lot of people for a loop.

To be honest I had no idea that it was part of their existing story... their concept from Tag me through Holiday Party just seemed to be focused on high school age kids living life and all the relatability of that. After School was so achingly poignant in its melodies and overall lyrical theme (the MV helped too) I think because it reminded people of their own memories of hanging out with their friend groups (or living vicariously through this song if you didn't have one). If the goddess concepts were being implemented throughout those eras, it was hard to pick up on in the MVs (maybe the cat? I heard someone say once it was the creator of the Weeekly universe?). I wonder what the story/thematic transition of Ven Para is supposed to be then? Like memories of them before losing their memories?

TheMetalPigeon

I love several of the points you made 😁 I just wanna point out that they've always been the lords/guardians/goddesses of the planets, though. They're called Weeekly because they each represent a celestial body that corresponds with a day of the week. The school concept only happened because the story is that they came to earth but forgot their memory, so they became students. For example, nowhere in The Weeekly Story are they shown as students :)

I think the documentary is simultaneously a cool idea... and also kinda weird and jarring. I might be a little skeptical of this notion that they're claiming to have planned this abrupt of a change from a school era concept to planetary demigoddesses. I think they didn't see the kind of chart and sales success from the releases they've had, despite After School's virality, and decided to change into something quicker than they planned. To bring aboard "music journalists" (with seemingly no other introduction) as a way to convince fans that hey you should be 100% on board with this change because this music journalist is explaining why and saying its okay... eh.... that's strange to me. That being said, I liked the interviews with the stylists and the cool, individual interviews with the members. I think I appreciate the ambition of what they were going for. If they're going to stick with this conceptual theme for the future (ie not going back to a lighter toned concept), I'd hope they get a more focused songwriting group than the people behind Ven Para.

Alas I'm on the opposite side of the country and the tickets are mad pricey so I think the chances are low but you never know... I might impulse buy if tickets are still available come payday lmao

Kaia (The Safe Cave)

Well if you're living near London when they're there, it might be a good idea to get out of the house a bit. You might run into them and maybe other kpop acts!
