“Come one and all, the show is about to begin!”
Elis stood on a large crate, lifting her small stature and carrying her voice. She was the clown ringleader for tonight, her heaving chest hypnotically bringing in the eyes while her voice infiltrated ears. Beside her, two other clowns. One laughed bubbly while the other sighed bitterly.
“Oh golly, I think I see a crowd!”
“…great, more to clean up after.”
Val glared at a nearby broom and dustpan but June just ignored her and eyed the strangers unblinkingly. Behind the three a large tent stood wide, filled with the slow swelling whimpering groans of rubber and taut fabric. Somewhere deep within, a boom and ripple shook everything within and through this tent.
“There’s another one.” Val groaned.
June hopped around for a moment to see. “Oooooooh look I think the next one could get even bigger!” June bounced on the balls of her feet, her hair and much of the rest of her following rhythmically. Elis grinned wider, showing off more of her gapped tooth.
“Oh we can only hope. This circus got so many attractions this year. So much variety and so many… volunteers.”
The girls laughed (even Val worked up a chuckle) as they welcomed the next batch of balloons to their fates.
