[Salvos] 729. Barred (Removed for KU)

(Removed for KU)

Comments

I love how Rachel worked so hard to be like Salvos that she now has almost exactly the same demeanor. She's like a mini-Salvos! Also, I love seeing Rachel laterally thinking everyone's way out of this mess even if they are too narrow minded to see that she has their best chance at a working solution. Meanwhile the offical academy plan is more likely to get an archangel to smash their barrier in a tantrum because: if the Arcraem can't have the Nexeus, then might as dissolve the whole thing with corruption.

Tic-tac-tic-tac! The clock is ticking on so many fronts and I can't stop imagining what Salvos might find or do in those places! That really invokes the feeling that not everyone can be saved! Although teleportation + clones can flip a lot of things around very quickly! Not to mention that [Salvo of Vanity] is so, so due for an upgrade... Yes, I'll keep saying that until it happens!

Also, the fact that Helena didn't respond to the call for help suggests she's "out of cell range", basically trapped in some corruption field in the Endlands, where normal magic doesn't work, and it's questionable whether she's able to navigate back at all, considering what happens to space there. Her team will likely have to be rescued as well.

Valda should've listened to what Rachel was telling the Centinels; might learn a thing or two.

People tend to be less open to new and crazy ideas when they are in acute danger, and even less so when they are in charge and lives of others depend on their actions. They tend to be conservative, stick to what is known and reliable, etc. I know this is all written from Rachel's position, and so it looks quite harmless, with good chance of success, whatever success is at this point. However, from Clayton's perspective this is siege of Szigetvar. I don't know if it's common knowledge elsewhere, but it is in Croatia. You see, in 1566 Suleyman the Magnificent led a vast Ottoman Turk army to Vienna. Had they succeeded, it would have changed history. The only thing that stood in their way was a Croatian-Hungarian garrison under the command of Nikola Šubić Zrinski. The Ottomans expected it to be a quick skirmish. Instead, this garrison held for 33 days, and on the final day when they ran out of everything, Nikola Šubić Zrinski opened the doors and led his remaining men into a banzai charge. Interestingly, not all defenders died - the Turks protected and hid some among themselves, because they saw them as great heroes, and that's how we historically know the details of the story. The opera piece composed about the event, "Nikola Šubić Zrinski", is a popular piece in Japan today, for understandable reasons. :) Basically, Clayton is in this position. He is in no mood for fucking around. If there's no outside force that can break them, the sieges always succeed. No outside force is forthcoming. He's running scenarios in his head - what if he had Helena, who could nuke the Centinel area with her GS, which would thin the herd to the point where an attack on the Matriarch could be mounted? What if the Watcher finally showed up? But those are very long shots. Can they evacuate? There's too many of them, and nobody in Human lands is safe anywhere now that those Centinels finally moved from the Gulf. His main weapons negate magic, so he can't use them here because they would take down the shield. His disintegration weapon is slow and good only against a singular target. He can go out and move quickly, culling the herd slowly, but that's too slow, not really efficient. He's probably researching spells that cover a wide area. However, he can see no victory. His best case scenario is that he manages to kill a few million Centinels, Matriarch and half a dozen Ancient Centinels survive, he dies, everybody in his school either teleports away or dies, all the children die, and the Centinels spread across Human lands and kill everyone. It's an apocalyptic event, and he has no way of stopping it.

Time for Valda to mobilize all the Students again.

Tim

just being a good dad after his second daughter started taking after his first crazy daughter

Damn... Clayton is so reactive! I know it's just because of stress and/or age, but as a scientist, he should be more curious, more proactive! What a beautiful conflict!

Dragonmaster_42

And "oh yeah 2.0": Clayton's family was for the most part all killed by the Centinel invasion; they were a noble family who had an estate by the Bloodied Gulf. It's an ancient story to him at this point, but still.

Danijel Turina

Oh yeah, one more thing: Clayton just assured that Rachel will be the last one to die when the shield breaks.

Imagine being in a forest hut in some very remote region, alone with your children, who are completely defenceless and can't handle firearms. You have a shotgun with two shots. A large pack of wolves surrounded your cabin, and it is certain that you can't wait it out. You called for help, but no help is coming. One of the children is trying to talk to the wolves through the door. You are telling her to shut the fuck up and go back, thinking whether to risk opening the door and firing those two shots, or wait a bit longer. However, there are over twenty wolves outside, they look very determined and aren't going anywhere, you already fired a shot, killed a few and the rest of them are now just staring at you. Whatever number you fail to kill, will kill you first, and then eat your children. Your only comfort is that you'll be dead and won't have to hear the screams.

Clayton has a lot on his plate already and might not feel like it. Sure, from a safe distance, yeah, he should have asked what she's doing, if she made progress, have there been any signs of aggression or are the Centinels calmed by her attempts, and so on. However, Clayton is the person in charge, everybody there is in acute mortal danger, he lost contact with Edithe's expedition and has to assume the worst, and he must be stressed out as all hell. That would put him in a very conservative mindset, to the point where he wouldn't even want to think about any more things, because he has too much on his plate already. To Rachel, who has literally no responsibilities, this would sound too restrictive. However, Clayton is dealing with a large set of unacceptable options, an empty set of available good options, and his most likely course of action if the shield starts fluttering is to go outside and sell his skin at a high price, basically kill as many Centinels as possible before they kill him, hoping to at least thin the herd. So, basically, she's talking to the man who contemplates sacrificing his life to buy her time in case anything goes even the slightest bit more wrong than it already is, and the only thing that prevents him from doing it now is knowledge that he won't get all the Centinels, and there will be nobody there to defend the school after he dies. Clayton is not in a good mood. He's not playing games. He's not open to suggestions. The last time he was open to suggestions, he lost Edithe, Willy and Centina, and has nothing to show for it. Hopefully he doesn't snap and get himself killed before help arrives.

Truly, we are in the darkest timeline

Oh no the centinels might evolve into twitter

Travis Brown

damn u Clayton, you’re halting progress

Clayton is the boomer that's set in his ways. This is so sad.

Azrie

Well now the centinels might start attacking, due to cancellation of their favorite drama and lose their shit :)

Always bothersome when authority figures don't stop to actually assess the situation before making things worse.
