First of all, I am sorry of being absent. No, I havent 'disappeared for good'. And no, I'm not 'just doing nothing in order to receive tips each month'. Long story short: I've paused one of my games (since april 2019, not 2018 as some said) in order to relax from burnout events (as I worked on it and other game demos like crazy). People like Blargh and others knew that I was frenetically coding, with almost no vacations since 2012. Then the pandemic (coronavirus) appeared in March 2020, along with a spine problem (an hernia). So I've been off those months. As I've got exhausted and lost some interest in games, I have no energy even to answer people. So again, I am sorry.
Let's go talk.
NEWS: Nintendo DMCA.
I've never said I would stop making games and demos. But, upon returning, in order to finish PUT game (a thing I would do, even if it could only be played by myself), like the remaining world 8 levels and futa mode, I was notified that some sites like github were shut off because of Nintendo DMCA. For me that's like 'Nintendo doesnt want your game being shared to people, even being freeware.' Well, wow! I never imagined one of my games, which is a parody, made from scratch (but I admit many characters and images are similar to Mario world), got too much media attention. Its funny (as I rather prefer to be a simple guy that make small games). I am somewhat shy and I love 'guetto sites', that is, small sites with some chit chatting and hentai demos. And I am not that kind of guy that 'shoot at the foot' attacking big corporations. Again, I am just an indie developer that dreams too much. Perhaps I am Akabur and Combination at their early stages, full of ideas and fetishes.
Many Mario parody games were made by fans. One of them, Mario is Missing, was made by Playshapes. I even asked him to change this name. Those Mario games ALREADY EXISTED back in 2009. They exist because people have dreams, and fetishes. Our nature is to create, parodies or not. But, when I talked to those people, I noticed hentai games were too blunt and 'quick' (that is, 5 minute fap then THE END). THIS was one of the reasons I decided to make PUT. What I havent imagined is that I was so addicted to it I made much more than I could afford, ending up with a huge game. Just to fulfill certain dreams and to say to Playshapes and other people: 'yes, it can be done'.
I noticed the news that got sites like polygon.com (you can just go there and read, as its one of the first posts). As I am a reader myself, I've read even all the comments), and I became sad at first, but at the same time, I became IMPRESSED. Wow, I never imagined people would love this freeware game at this extent But I became frustrated about some comments and I'll answer them quickly here.
' Who makes a porn game based on a massive IP by a notoriously litigious corporation and throws it up on Github of all places? Ballsy as hell, but boy was that stupid. ' The thing is, THIS was my friend idea just to retain the dialogue code (french, german, portuguese) and to keep some of the latest versions. I wanted to keep the code clean and with rollbacks (with a repository system). I am a coder, not a publisher or an advocate in sites where we can post novelties, patches etc.
' Porn is one thing, but the developer claiming he’d rather be dead than abandon his game...'. When I say 'I'd rather die', it means I love the game. It was born with hard work and endless nights, just to be a more immersive game (and to stop me from asking other Mario parody gamers to do this and that feature on their demos - they used to refuse all my ideas, except Blargh).
' He could do a reskin and it would still be good, porn-game wise. ' I agree. It's one of the options I'll tell below.
The thing is, I am a good person and I like to respect rules and be at the safe side. I'll check what I could do by the laws of fair use.
So, THE FUTURE of PUT:
I have three options: 1- check the fair use with the transformative work, and check if I can comply with the rules. If I need to change something, like certain characters, names, even music if necessary, I will. I don't mind working even more for this change. 2- Let it 'just my game'. A game 'inside the house'. This is not illegal as its a creation (just like our dreams). A game that could have 500 scenes and 100 levels, tons of fetishes, but a 'closed game' for friends. 3- Just 'abandon' the game. Although no official links, we know the game could be found elsewhere (because there are people that keeps copies of it). They could even update it slowly, like putting new levels and fixing bugs. I can't control that (and I am not responsible for that). But I wont' be giving links anymore.
I prefer to try option 1.
FOCUSING AT OTHER GAMES:
PuT gave me a thing no other game gave: enthusiasm and wisdom to make better games. Someone said we can lose everything in life, provided we keep health and certain knowledge. I can then focus to my next game, with unicque characters, by the help of contributors, talented people or not, just like PUT was. And finally get the freedom I need to see it glow (and fulfill my 'madness' of having a HUGE game). I'm akin to freeware games because people love freedom, and others can code it if I die, or else. People know that one of my future games will be Wonderful Sonja, a platformer I'll make in Unity. I'll use all that I've learn in PUT. It will be a huge leap (just like Flash AS2 to AS3). I would start programming in C#. But I already told my team I want to have controls like Adobe Flash (like shapes - SVG, and rigging animation).
READJUSTING TIERS:
People that know me personally know I am not a 'money hogger'. The example is that there are dozens (or more) of donation sites where the creator abandons everything for good but still earns like $8000 a month. Here, I will be happy, be it $0, be it $100 a month. Indeed, tips are ways to tell you people love your work and support you, something like 'you're in the right road, please continue'. So I will readjust tiers. As Blargh was the one that made animation demos (not full games), so it's fair use, I'll check if he could keep doing that. For now, I plan simple tiers, along with '15 day to get early updates of demos and my next game releases', and other with '30 day to get early updates'. I'll think better about that, but instead of promises, I want to start the next game (then I should come here with something).
Thank you for the patience.
