A Summer Night to Remember - New Concert Composition - Recording and Score Sheet
Added 2022-05-23 08:35:31 +0000 UTCI have been a bit silent here for the last couple of days but I had a good reason for that. I spent my last week in Cologne to attend the rehearsals and concert of my piece A SUMMER NIGHT TO REMEMBER. Last year, the WDR Funkhausorchester approached me to commission a piece to fit into their concert programme titled SUMMER LOVE.
The orchestra is well known in Germany mainly for crossing genres and regularly performs with Jazz and Pop artists so they are sitting in the area between traditional classical orchestra and pop orchestra. They are usually a 50+ piece ensemble with traditional line-up but tend to add rhythm section and other unusual instruments to their line-up.
I was asked to write a piece for a traditional line-up (to ensure compatibility for later performances) that would fit into the general topic of Summer Love and would appeal to their usual audience.
In general I'm really happy how it turned out. The orchestra really put their heart and soul into the performance and seemed to really enjoy playing it in spite of it being a quite tricky piece. It was masterfully conducted by Frank Strobel who is their artistic leader since 2021.
It was a nice opportunity to get out of the constraints of media composition and write a concert piece.
