Another excellent speaker, thank you, but I do want to offer a more balanced view on HK as a financial centre. 1. Wall Street firms seldom look at HK alone in their APAC strategies. As long as mainland China maintains open door and welcomes foreign financial firms, firms like HSBC, JP Morgan and Citigroup will continue to grow their business there, and HK is a crucial part of their strategies as long as we maintain free flow of capital, e.g. it’s easier for them to move money from mainland China to HK, it’s easier to risk manage their China risks in HK than say from New York. 2. I do not think the comparison between foreign financial firms and Alibaba is an appropriate one - foreign financial firms will never be as big and as influential as Alibaba on the mainland, and foreign firms tend to be more obedient. 3. US authorities do not only assess HK on the basis of how well Wall Street firms do in the SAR. It used to be when Wall Street sneezes, the rest of the world’s financial markets get a cold. But this is no longer the case. Imagine if the US authorities try to destabilise the USD/HKD peg, the repercussions can well boomerang Wall Street. Do you want this to happen when the economic recovery in the US is so fragile? And if I were the Treasury Secretary, why would I let the State Department to take all the credit for bashing China while I have to deal with the mess? US has fought China on trade, technology etc but on the financial front, things are a lot more complicated and it’s definitely not a one-way street.
