The CCP’s effort of rewriting of HK history is now advancing in all key respects. It’s part of propaganda to brainwash our new generations by denying Britain’s rich legacy in HK and severing HK’s historical connection to Britain, by greatly stretching the historical context as to how the imperial Qing dynasty's China fell victim to the two Opium Wars, and by erasing a British colony’s part in HK’s 155-year-long stories. This’s an attempt to impose a stronger Chinese identity (nothing to do with the pre-1949 Chinese culture but one defined by the party-scripted patriotism) and to implant the idea that HK has always and indispensably been part of China, in a bid to underscore the point that Britain was the temporary occupier by the means of force and unequal treaties rather than a colonial governor. Plainly speaking, Britain had only exercised governance over the territory, but never had sovereignty. (In the CCP’s propaganda playbook, no legal sovereignty is not at odds with the right to govern for over 150 years.) This's a clear extension of the storyline to depict the 2019 social unrest as riots and a serious threat to national security orchestrated by “external forces,” thereby justifying all draconian counter-measures thereafter. Are teachers who remain their positions still a force to be reckoned with? Absolutely. Despite manifold reasons behind, many have to painfully power through the dark age. They're all worth taking our respects for, with a ray of hope, their last-ditch resistance to prolong the process of brainwashing our next generations. In this day and age of the new HK riddled with tip-off, people within the long arm are risky to fob the authorities off their edicts with some excuse or smartly doing damage control to a very subtle extent. Some may argue that these teachers are ostriches sticking their heads in the sand if they refuse to realize the fact that HK is teetering on the precipice of free fall, both economically and politically and that nothing can change HK a bit better. Probably true. Yet there’re still many families that cannot leave, at least in this moment. Distressed parents are worried about not so much their children being schooled by teachers (their own children may have already studied aboard) doing their utmost to please the authorities for their own sake as about no “yellow-submarine” teachers educating their children.
