【堅離地書院】王丹答學生提問筆錄摘要（九）：海外民運的經驗教訓，有甚麼值得香港人學習？

王丹 :
我覺得最大的一個教訓是絕望這件事情，就是幾十年來你可以看到參與民運的人越來越少，他的絕望不一定是關於能不能回到中國，或中國能不能民主化而絕望，而是他看到了人性，中國人自己也有很多行惡的部份。
當我們再努力追逐民主，很多人是冷嘲熱諷、抹黑、袖手旁觀、鍵盤俠 …… 很多人因為這些而絕望退出海外民運。
然後有一些具野心的，或性格不好的人進來，海外民運就會出現更多的問題。
所以我覺得很大的教訓就是如果你要做一個流亡群體、流亡運動，或者是更廣泛的反對運動，你的字典裏頭不應該有絕望這兩個字，甚至不應該有抱怨這兩個字，你走上這條舉步維艱的路是自己決定的。一早上來時不覺得這條路很苦嗎？你走到一半覺得很苦、覺到看不到前途，然後就放棄，我覺得這個狀況至少是中國海外民運多年來一個很大的問題，就是太多的人因這種絕望而輕易的放棄。
所以我強烈呼籲香港的年青人，不管前路多麼困難，不管你怎樣都看不到前景，不管你現在看到多麼黑暗的現實，你都不應該絕望。
我們學歷史的人才能講出這種話，就是你看人類幾千年歷史你就知道，沒有一個社會的狀態是可以永恆的固定的，事情是一定會變化，考驗的就是我們能不能堅持到那天而已。

Dictators know well that the cheapest sort of governance is threat, an effective means in very short a time to frustrate many who in turn become much less to hope than to fear from the chance of their arms. As a result, it can force some reluctantly to give in some of the time. If history is any guide, however, ruling by fear can never bring all people to surrender all the time. If a person is yet to undergo few ups and a cascade of downs during his lifetime, his resolve is not iron enough to get ready to defeat, both physically and mentally, a powerful, vicious, corrupt opponent so as to construct a less corrupt, a more righteous world.
