Just heard from a HK epidemiology expert that the effective reproductive number (Rt) of the current COVID-19 wave in mainland China is estimated to be between 10 and 17.
This means, on average, 1 infected individual will infect 10 to 17 people. This is super fast.
The epidemic doubles every 1 or 2 days in mainland China right now.
Given that there are now 200 million+ already infected in mainland China, the epidemic is likely to reach the majority of the population in a matter of 1 week.
My contact says that the estimated number of deaths may be around the range of 500,000 to 2 million.
Imagine this will happen from now to the end of January: this is a horrific number of deaths within 2 months.
