Many participants in the 1967 riot not only revel in the political aspirations and paradoxes of the past, but they are also in thrall largely to the interwoven recollection of the communist China’s intoxicating aura and the vicissitudes of forsaken life. The attitude one takes toward their past will shape the path they choose to move on, and this gives rise to individuals with various characters and mentalities. Hence, it is crucial to evaluate an individual holistically, considering all aspects, rather than solely relying on their explicit ideology. Chip Tsai’s new book, I believe, can take us to the captivating blend of contradictions filled in a life that plucked success from the jaws of failure, as well as the appealing tale of how the party-backed high-flyers eventually turned to dust when circumstances shifted.
