2024-03-23 16:49:02 +0000 UTCThe US had warned Russia earlier this month of plans for a potential attack and told its citizens not to join public gatherings in Russia. In response, Putin interestingly called these warnings a "provocation." Any "kind" warnings are seen by dictators as ulterior motives without making an effort, or lacking enough resources to make it, to verify the truthfulness. Not only is this attack undeniably a face-losing incident for a freshly re-elected leader who had claimed in the election campaign that he was the only leader able to keep the country safe, it is also a crisis of his strongman authority. Worse yet for Russia, this attack is very much a display of its intelligence services going down in flames. Putin has attempted to link the perpetrators responsible for the Moscow attack to the Ukrainian government, claiming with no factual substantiation that some were captured while trying to flee to Ukraine. It comes as no surprise that Russia will try hard to make up more connections of the attack to Ukraine, regardless of having evidence or not, in an attempt to divert attention away from its failed intelligence and dilute criticism over no preemptive action after receiving US warnings, to stir up anti-Ukrainian hysteria among the citizens, and to create conditions to gain public support for further military mobilization in the invasion. Now he's reaping what he has sown, and the rule of hatred is going to run in a loop until Putin's demise.
