College

College

College

College

Rhodes

Good Year

I would say that the flurry of backlash against the Ivy League presidents wasn't so much about their stance on antisemitic remarks as it was about their failure to maintain consistent standards regarding remarks on racial discrimination. If we examine the circumstances surrounding Claudine Gay's resignation from the Harvard presidency, significant doubts have emerged ever since she assumed her post—even without considering the plagiarism allegations—as to whether her academic achievements are sufficient to qualify her for the role of president at one of the most prestigious universities in the world. Many of these allegations could hardly be said to be fabricated out of thin air. Long before the successive departures of the Ivy League presidents—first Liz Magill at UPenn, then Gay at Harvard, and Minouche Shafik at Columbia of late—the higher education system in the US, and perhaps the entire system, has been tipping over from elitism into reverse discrimination—racism against white and Asian students on school admission—and an excessive focus on redemption from "white sin." The most interesting aspect of this storm of protests is that many pro-Palestine students first appeared to have displayed unwavering support for Palestine and made significant efforts to drum up enthusiasm to cajole others to join the protests. However, when they realized that they might come under scrutiny during job searches and that some major employers were reluctant to hire graduates who had participated in pro-Palestinian protests, the fervor of their antisemitic sentiments suddenly ebbed away, much quicker than Hamas militants pulled out when Israeli forces advanced. They were also afraid of revealing their names displayed on the protesters' list. Their response indicates that when their own interests are at stake, they no longer have their binary-operated heads in the clouds. Some powerful and outspoken Jewish donors, such as Bill Ackman, have pointed out that the core issue prevailing on university campuses has long extended beyond the discussion of antisemitism and Israel-Hamas conflicts. It actually stems from an ideology that classifies the worldview simply as oppressors and the oppressed without considering the historical context, leading to discrimination against those who oppose this binary, oversimplified view and classifying them as the former. Thanks to the influence of Jewish heavyweights reining in far-left expansion and initiating introspection among silent majority, I hope this marks the beginning of a much-needed overhaul of a system excessively fixated on mindless redemption.
