Victory or Death - Preview Sketches

So, as I mentioned before, things are bound to be a little slow around here this month. It'll hopefully pay off with a buttload of process shots later on, but for now I'm up to my ears in getting ready to get Victory or Death ready for pre-orders (August 20th, holy shit!).

I don't want it to be a total ghost town here, so I wanted to share a couple of sketches I did for one of the pieces I'm going to be putting into book myself.

The one on the left was my first crack at it. I wanted to play with a bit of a what-if situation, where Sendak was actually successful in capturing the castle and bringing it back to Zarkon. The helmets of all of the paladins are stuck on pikes behind him, except for Pidge's, which he's crushing in his gauntlet.

Something didn't sit right with me about the pose or the composition, and the energy of him crunching the green helmet felt a little too specific for what I felt should be a more general piece. It also felt way too casual. I wanted something that was a little scarier, and a little more prim and proper to reflect the attitude of a soldier.

This time all of the helmets are behind him, and instead he's saluting as if he's in the middle of announcing to Zarkon that he's got all his shit in order. I feel it makes a better statement overall, so this is the one I'm gonna run with for this particular piece.

Thaaaaaaaank god I don't have to have these finished before the pre-orders open. They just have to be ready to go when the book goes to print.
