Prince Phobos creates Caleb from a crystal flower in the place of his holy of holies - in the source of magical powers and energy.

"Whisperers" - mystical androgynous beings, fairies of flowers and plants, which Prince Phobos created from his flesh and essence. They are connected with him, serve as his "eyes and ears" and form something like an information network around the garden and palace. They are his personal servants and spies, if they break the connection with him, then they acquire personality and free will, like Caleb.

"Caleb was originally created as a "murmurer" by Prince Phobos, which are flowers that have been transformed into humanoid beings that make up Prince Phobos's court and are usually intensely loyal to him. However, Caleb somehow developed a will of his own and broke free from his creator, becoming a leader of the rebel forces who opposed Phobos's rule. Quickly establishing himself an intelligent, brave, capable, and kind leader, he rapidly gained popularity among the people of Meridian."

"During the reign of Phobos, he began his cult and had become obsessed with himself. He recreated the royal court of Meridian and to favor his rule, he created the Whisperers from a flower and from his own essence. The Whisperers served as his court officials who were the only ones permitted to see Phobos in person. Daltar stated that Phobos was locked in the castle with the court of Whisperers. Apparently, some Whisperers became independent and have gained their own will. Caleb was amongst the independent Whisperers. Another is Raskal who appeared in the special issue, Return of the Queen. Later Phobos developed a new kind of Whisperer, but more powerful, called the Annihilators."
