I was in Irma's eye
Added 2017-09-12 18:34:00 +0000 UTCIt was scary. The center of the eye traveled through a field near my house, about a 10 minute walk away. Irma hit us most strongly during the night, which left all those scary noises to the imagination. I wasn’t sure how well the house would hold up, but it did just fine. My house is surrounded by woods, and I wasn’t sure if that would help mitigate wind damage, or hurt with falling trees. It helped. Lots of lone trees in the area fell, but the ones in the woods fared much better. Some water came under the door, and the property is covered with branches, but it’s nothing I can’t handle.
A lot of the power and cable networks have significant damage. My power just came back a few hours ago. I’m one of the lucky early ones, as they said it would take 7 to 10 days. Everything is closed and there’s still no fuel here, so I’m sort of stranded at home for a while. After I clean everything up and finish cutting up the larger branches, it’ll be back to work for me.
This was my forth hurricane. Charley and Jeanne weren't as scary for us. Frances was actually pretty bad, because it sat on us for a while. I lived in a more open area then. Frances damaged every house in my neighborhood except mine. That was super lucky, lottery winner lucky. I joke that maybe it was because everyone was praying except me, and God was sick of hearing it.
