If it was done well there wouldn't be an issue. And yes, it is very possible for one aspect to color your impression of the show as a whole. But the show isn't "bad" because of the flaws - season one has a lot going for it. The design, the worldbuilding, the lore...it's fantastic. That's why the flaws are noticable - you can clearly see how good it could have been without certain elements. Like the romance.

If your at all interested there was a Legend of Korra game released 3 or 4 years ago on all system. You go through Republic city as Korra and it even had a Pro Bending mode. For an avatar fan it was pretty fun.

This is where knowing the behind the scenes stuff can hurt. So if this season was all Korra was ever going to be, then yes, the love story is a little on the generic side and it hurts to think that this could've been it. Since the next 3 seasons were't initially planned it makes us judge this more as a stand alone season (and love story) instead of a first part of a 4 part story. This is the conflict I experienced. However, if you put the behind the scenes stuff away for a second and you take this season's love story and juxtapose it to upcoming storylines, it gives Korra depth and maturity as a character, not simply because of how it all ends, but also because of the different pathways the story took in which to get there. Its difficult to digest all 4 books of Korra into one cohesive story because 1.) ATLA did exactly that so well and 2.) Each Korra book is so fiercely independent, haha like Korra, but it helps bring out the best of this show to do so.

To be fair to Korra, this is probably her first romantic relationship. Definitely one of the weaker points of the show but I don't hate it.

The whole teen romance/drama is the reason why i can't appreciate season as much as the last two. It felt simple, cheap and unnecessary. Having romance isn't bad in and of itself, but it has to be dome right - with a sensitive touch. Korra just feels genereic at times, lacking in depth.

The brothers each take after a different parent, with one parent being a fire bender and the other an earth bender. In fact, the parents are a good example of why republic city was created. The war lasted so long that some places just couldn’t go back to being earth kingdom, kicking out all fire nation citizens. It was multiple generations of fire nation soldiers raising families whose members became friends and spouses to the earth kingdom families. So republic city was the compromise. An independent city state with leaders and representatives from all nations. I imagine it’s one of the reasons they went with an early 20th century New York as an inspiration for the setting, what with it’s immigrant/multicultural history.

I agree with Nahid completely. Sorry to say, but you can tell that Korra was targeted to angsty, hormonal teenagers going through puberty who are suckers for a cheap romance story. That’s my problem with Korra. It felt like Twilight, not a spiritual adventure like Avatar was.

remember this show was made to aim to more of a teenager audience (the children who grew up after watching aang). So yeah, teenager love is present at the beggining. But dont worry, the show matures a lot (and I mean A LOT) as the seasons go on. (I think it is not spoiler so, btw, the brothers' mom is fire, the dad is earth)
