So Jayne is pretty easy. He doesn't think that Simon and River are part of the crew which he is loyal to. The first episode when Kaylee is shot you see him looking on from a window in concern. He is a junkyard dog adopted by the crew of Serenity. He won't betray them. I also like the part where he asks Mal what he is going to tell the crew as to why he is dead, and told him not to tell them what happened (showing he cares what they think), which I think is why Mal let him stay (and live).
