2018-10-18 05:42:23 +0000 UTCDespite his title, Coulson isn't really Director of SHIELD. He's director of a small rogue element that Fury built up independent of the larger organization. They call themselves SHIELD under the assumption that the larger organization is dead and gone, and that they need to rebuild it from the ground up. As they've pointed out multiple times, they have very little manpower and very little support. Just because Fury crowned him doesn't mean Coulson magically took everything over. SHIELD was massive and heavily compartmentalized (one of Captain America's many issues he had with it early in TWS). It's very easy to see how Coulson could manage to miss some things. Besides, they'll explain more about these guys, so don't think about it too hard.

2018-10-17 14:02:14 +0000 UTCI have to admit that out of 110 episodes, this is probably bottom 3 for me personally. Don't get me wrong, I ADORE Shield and there are some decent parts to this episode. But, the cheesy May voice-overs and weird Ward melodrama irk me every time. I'm glad we have some amazing upcoming episodes to look forward to though.

The whole world knows aliens are real and some are hostile. Think of the fear and paranoia that would create against anything "alien". So yeah, finding out Coulson was brought back from the dead through injections of alien DNA would seriously freak people out.
