If you look at the flashback again, you can see Stanley throwing his peanuts to the right of the motion machine and putting the grate back. But when Stanford came later the next day, the grate was open and the peanuts were far away from the machine. This is pretty good proof that Stanley wasn't the one that broke it. Later, Blendin doesn't tell what he wants in return for helping Bill. The most likely thing is that Blendin knew he couldn't stop Bill from opening the rift, so he asked for knowledge of when he needed to go to to stop Bill in the future and what he needed to do. Which was splitting them up.
